Background and Identification
The router is a device that sends data packets in between two different internet protocol (IP) networks. The router also directs the traffic of data packets between the two networks and the Internet. Data packets include emails, images, web pages, etc. It is impossible for a computer to connect to the Internet without a router.
Routers can come in all shapes and sizes. Smaller routers are typically used for homes and small offices. These kinds of routers are usually the owner's cables or the DSL router that connects to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). Larger and more sophisticated routers, such as enterprise routers, are used to connect large business or ISP networks to the even larger core routers that make up the backbone of the Internet. The service information on this page will focus on the smaller routers rather than the larger ones.
Router technology has come a long way in recent years. The most recent piece of router technology is the mesh WiFi system. In the mesh Wifi system, also known as Whole Home WiFi, a main router is directly connected to the modem while numerous nodes are placed throughout the area of needed service. Older routers typically consisted of ‘dead zones’ where connections to the Internet were either weak or nonexistent. The mesh Wifi system allows connectivity throughout an entire building or area and minimizes the dead zones.
If your Internet connection is poor or has deteriorated from previous years, you should consider upgrading your router. A typical router used for small businesses and homes last three to five years and should be replaced accordingly.
