Hey there internet users! My name is David, and I'm an iFixit technical writer emeritus. I had a lot of fun writing guides and teardowns from April 2010 to June 2013. In fact, on my first day I got to help write the MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010 Teardown. For a list of everything else I've done at iFixit, check out the Contributions tab above.
I am not a computer programmer, so I don't pretend to be one. I am also not a repair technician, so I don't pretend to be one of those, either. I am a mechanical engineer who has enough experience dealing with technology to understand how most of it works and what makes a lot of things break. My 3+ years with iFixit helped me to learn how to troubleshoot a wide variety of devices.
I have quite a few hobbies that I like to participate in outside of work and school. I have played the drums since 5th grade, and I am a lifetime member of the Cal Poly marching band. The weekends that weren't committed to the band, I spent with the Cal Poly bowling team, which I was also a member of. My most time-consuming and costly hobby, though, is definitely my car.
My vehicle of choice (yes, of choice) is a Screaming Yellow (proper Ford color name) 2006 Ford Focus hatchback. I affectionately named my car Colonel Mustard, and I don't think I need to explain why. I take iFixit's repair philosophy very seriously, and apply it to my car's maintenance. I do all of my own car repairs (assuming they can be done in my garage) and have even made some performance modifications. Right now the car is lowered 1.5" on Ford Racing progressive springs and Ford Racing performance dampers, with a Cosworth cold air intake and a custom 91 octane ECU tune from Focus-Power.
Of course I am. I love gizmos and gadgets, and I'm always down for a good physics joke. And to set the record straight, the original Star Wars trilogy is so much better than episodes 1-3.

Why stop there? Come up with a USB-C splitter cable, connect the two 6Ps, and then you have perpetual power that's actually useful!
Our best guess is that the battery serves some sort of basic date/time retaining function, similar to the PRAM battery on a computer's logic board. As for the caps, we went back later to remove them and didn't find anything interesting—just some more resistors and whatnot.
Orange, the manufacturer.
See my reply to Dumitru's question above. We never throw anything away.
We usually only dust off the JIS drivers if Phillips drivers aren't working for us. In this case, our Phillips #00 bit got the job done, so we left it at that.
At $2,100 for "entry-level" and pro models rocketing towards $6,000, it's hard to say that full-frame isn't still a luxury reserved for at least the semi-rich. What I'm more interested in seeing is how the entire spectrum of consumer cameras changes as smartphones' cameras eclipse point-and-shoots and mirrorless SLRs start to replace traditional APS-C DSLRs.
We did not attempt to put it back together, since the good folks at Chipworks needed the sensor and other ICs to perform their intensive tests. We still use the D5100 we did a teardown of a couple years ago, though.
Security Torx drivers work on both regular Torx and security Torx bits, so we sell the security drivers to keep people from having to buy two tools.
If you take out one of the fans or the battery cells, sure. I wouldn't suggest doing either of those, though.
Those are the computer and battery model numbers, respectively. They've done that for a while now.
