Paper Not Feeding Properly or Jamming

The printer is not properly taking in paper from the tray or the display screen warns you of a paper jam. These issues often go hand in hand.

Paper Jammed Within the Printer

Check the paper trays, rear door, and automatic document feeder below tray 2 (the bottom, front facing tray) for any jams. To remove any jams, firmly tug the paper with both hands.

Damaged or Improperly Loaded Paper

If your paper appears to not be even in texture, it may be too humid. Try removing the top ten sheets from your stack. If the environment you store paper in is very dry, it may have built up static electricity. Hold your stack of paper and gently flex it up and down to get rid of it. Check your paper tray and make sure it is not loaded above the specifying line and that the paper guides are accurately positioned. If the tray is overloaded, take out the appropriate amount of paper.

Worn or Dirty Rollers

Use a warm, damp cloth to wipe the rollers located right over the tray. Inspect them closely to see if they are completely smooth. If they are, they are too worn and will need replacement. You can see how to remove your printer's rollers here.

Printer Not Connecting to Wireless Networks or Devices

In the software setup process, your computer is not detecting your printer, or you are having issues connecting your printer to a wifi connection.

Software Not Installed

Be sure to install the printer's software drivers via this link. It is recommended you download the latest version. The web site should auto-detect your computer's operating system but, double check that you, for example, are not downloading the Windows software on a Mac computer. The drop down menu will let you switch your preferred operating system if by any chance it auto-detects incorrectly.

Corrupted Software Download

If the printer cannot be found while installing the software, you may have a corrupted download. Try unplugging your router for three seconds and rebooting it. Delete the software file on your computer in its file manager, and restart the computer. Now try reinstalling the software and see if it works.

Incompatible WiFi Connection

If your WiFi network name ends in “5 GHZ” that frequency may not be compatible. Check to see if you have a connection that ends in “2.4 GHZ” instead and try that one. If you do not have one named as such, you can login to your WiFi settings by searching your IP address (can be found by Googling "what is my IP?") in your web browser. Because the exact process within the settings varies by router, you may have to check your manual to see where in your settings this is done if it is not evident for your respective machine.

Defective Wireless Card

If you are sure that you have the correct software installed and that your WiFi is suitable then your printer may have a defective internal networking component. You can follow this guide to replace the damaged component.

Printer Not Powering On

The printer fails to power up and no lights or sounds can be detected.

Defective Power Cord

Make sure the power cord is properly connected to the back of the printer, and plug the socket into a functional wall outlet. Avoid plugging cord into a surge protected to ensure the printer receives full voltage. If the printer shows no signs of powering on, consider getting a new AC power cord.

Defective USB Cord

(This only applies if your PC/laptop is connected to the printer with a USB cable.)

Remove the USB cable from your PC/laptop and turn on the printer. If the printer turns on, consider replacing the USB cable.

Damaged Power Button

If you are sure that all of your cords and outlets are working then the power button on your printer might be broken. You can follow this guide to replace it.

Defective Power Supply

If changing the power cord and outlet does not work and you are sure that the power button is functional then it is possible that you have a damaged power supply. You can follow this guide to replace it.

Display Staying White on Startup

The printer fails to fully boot-up as the device is powered on and displays a white screen.

Firmware not Updated

Make sure your printer is always up to date by installing the latest firmware update from the HP website. Connect your printer to the computer by either a USB cable or an online network and select the appropriate printer and computer specifications and click 'Send Firmware'. Once the firmware update is complete, restart the printer.

External Cables Interfere with Startup

When starting up the printer, remove all cable accessories such as the USB, fax, and ethernet cables to ensure the printer is operating alone.

Poor Print Quality

Printed pages are blurry, faded or otherwise low quality.

Out of Toner or Toner Cartridge isn't Properly Installed

Check if your printer is displaying a low toner message, if it is then replace the toner. If it is not then make sure the cartridge is properly installed, consider cleaning the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth. Using non-HP cartridges can cause problems with the printer, make sure you are using a compatible toner cartridge.

Print Settings are Too Low

Make sure that your printing at a high enough quality, access the print quality settings and adjust accordingly. Print settings can be accessed on the print tab. It might be called setting, properties or preferences.

Printer isn't Properly Calibrated

Make sure that the printer is calibrated. Access printer menu, go to system set up and quality, select color calibration and press calibrate now.

Can you possibly add how to fix the problem of the toner arms that connect to the toner chips not going down. It got stuck at the up position when the toner cover is opened, and will not disengaged and go down to connect to the toner chips and thus give “Supply memory error “ codes 10.000x and 10.1000x on all cartridges.

Does anybody know if it’s possible to add more RAM to this printer? I’ve been sending a lot of graphics-heavy jobs to it lately and it’s just chugging along. Past HP LaserJets have had slots for adding RAM. I’m not sure if this has slots for memory or it’s soldered on.
