Laptop Does Not Power On

The laptop does not respond to being powered on, no lights on the laptop.

Faulty Power Adapter

Check to see if the charge light is currently on with the power adapter plugged in. If the light is not on, your power adapter may be faulty, in which case you may want to buy a replacement adapter.

Faulty Motherboard

If your charge light is on and you still cannot power the system on, your motherboard may be faulty. If this is the case, you will want to replace your motherboard using this guide.

Screen Is Blank

Laptop powers on, but the screen is completely blank and unresponsive.

Faulty Display

Using an HDMI cord, plug your laptop into an external display to ensure that the issue is your laptop screen. If the external display works fine, make sure that the display connector on your motherboard is plugged all the way in. For steps on accessing the display connector, use this guide until step 10.

Memory Failure

If there is no output to an external display, try re-seating the memory using this guide. If that does not work, you may want to replace your memory module.

Laptop Does Not Hold A Charge

Laptop turns on when plugged in but does not hold a charge.

Faulty Battery

Laptop Overheats and Shuts Down

While operating laptop, the device gets warm/hot and shuts down without warning.

Dusty Components

A build up of dust in any computer system can cause a lack of airflow, and thus overheat the system. Try opening up the back of your laptop as shown in this guide and use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of your machine.

Faulty Cooling System

Your cooling system may not be functioning properly. Check to see that your cooling fan is actually moving. If it is not, replace it using this guide. If it is, try reapplying the thermal paste to your CPU as shown in the same guide.

Very Loud “Hum” Coming From the Laptop

While operating your laptop under normal conditions, there is a loud humming noise being emitted from the device.

Faulty Cooling Fan

Remove the hard drive using this guide. If you can power up your laptop and it is still making noise, you may have a faulty cooling fan. Check to see that there isn’t a build up of dust in your cooling fan.

Faulty Hard Drive

If your cooling fan is spinning properly, the noise is likely coming from your hard drive. Backup your data on another drive if possible, and replace the one in your laptop using this guide.

Laptop Loops through Startup Cycle

When powering on the laptop it turns off, then on again, and continues in this loop.

External Device Interference

If you have any attached USB or DVD devices, please disconnect them from the laptop and attempt a manual reset by powering down your laptop and then powering the system on again. It is possible that these devices are interfering with the startup process for the laptop.

Contracted Virus

If removing the devices and performing the manual reset does not resolve the issue, then the startup cycle is most likely a result of a virus corrupting your laptop’s BIOS (Basic Input Output System). You can recover your laptops BIOS by recovering the system’s last working BIOS version. Follow this guide to reset your laptops BIOS.

Laptop Restarts Unexpectedly

While operating your laptop, it spontaneously restarts during usage or shut down process.

Disable the Automatic Restart Feature

Most likely if your device is restarting unexpectedly then it is possible that the Automatic Restart feature is turned on. This feature causes the laptop to restart when an issue within the device is found. Turn off this feature by following these steps provided by HP.

Battery Malfunction

If turning of the automatic restart function does not work, it is possible that there could be dust building up between the battery and device connectors. This dust build can cause the system to restart by preventing contact between the battery and laptop. You can fix this by removing the battery as shown and using a compressed air can to blow dust off the connectors.
