Why is my battery not charging?

Motherboard refused to charge the battery anymore...a week after the guarantee ran out.

Lenovo wanted 800€ for a new motherboard.

I fitted a cable through the casing and soldered it directly onto the battery terminals to charge it directly. That's kept it alive ever since.

I'd prefer to fix it!

The AC adapter will not power the laptop: no evidence of life when the adapter is connected. But, the adapter will charge a phone or any other USB C device I've checked.

The connector show no sign of a dry joint.

Note the charger supplies 20v, which exists at J9 and J13.

With my limited time I got to this converter:

Onwards from there is a rabbit hole.

I note that various places that reference B+ which I think in the combined mains/battery feed are all 0v, as expected.

While I am very grateful for the help offered and would love to bring this to a successful conclusion, the reality is that the pc is useable at the moment, and I don't think I have the tools to be able to extract/replace a SMD component so and am worried I will end up causing further damage....

@steve5964 since the battery charges with you having created a direct connection, the issue appears to be your charging circuit. Here is the Lenovo ThinkPad E590 Hardware MAintenance Manual Start of by checking the Power system checkout starting on page 28 of the manual. Let us know what works and what does not. IF all of that checks out, we need to know what motherboard your ThinkPad has. I show it to be a NM-B911 If so, then you want to check things out around the Battery charger boost converter BQ25700A as well as U4302 which is your Type C load switch NX20P5090UK

Here are the documents which you will need to attempt to fix your own board. NM B911 E490and the boardview LCFC NM B911 FE490 FE590 FE480 R1.0 BoardView Nothing wrong with trying. Post some good pictures of your motherboard with your Question so we can see what you see and hopefully we can help you out further. 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Hi @steve5964

With the charger connected, check if there is 5V DC on J9 as shown in the image below

If there is no 5V at J9, then you have to check the components, on the underside of the board as shown in the following image that shows where the power comes from the USB-C port to get to the +VBUS_CONN lead. I've highlighted some components that you can use as test points to check for the voltage

If there is 5V at J9, you have to use the schematic and follow both the +VBUS_CONN and the +VBUS_CONN_L leads and check to where the voltage doesn't appear.

Use the search function in your browser to locate the paths in the schematic file to find the components and in the boardview file to find the location of the components on the board.

It may come down to having to remove the board from the case so that you can check components on both sides of the board.

Hey, @steve5964.

You could try replacing the battery, as it is much cheaper than an $800 motherboard. iFixit sells batteries for your exact model here, and they're significantly cheaper than a motherboard replacement. It should only take about fifteen minutes, but you must do it with your own knowledge, as iFixit doesn't offer guides for this model. I hope this helped you solve your problem today.
