Vacuum won’t turn on
The vacuum won’t power on
Not plugged in correctly
Make sure the vacuum plug has a secure connection to the outlet or it will not turn on. A way to check this is by gently wiggling the cord to make sure the plug does not fall out of the outlet.
Circuit Breaker is tripped
Initially powering up the vacuum can cause the circuit breaker to trip because vacuums can draw a lot of power. If the breaker was tripped first start by checking the breaker on the outlet. To reset the breaker simply pressing the reset button on the outlet. If the outlet doesn’t have a breaker then you may need to locate your circuit breaker panel and make sure the circuit breaker for that outlet wasn’t tripped.
On/Off switch not on or broken
Sometimes double checking that the vacuum switch is simply on can help solve the problem. If the switch is push on, but the vacuum still won't power on it could be that the switch itself is broken and needs to be replaced.
Cord is broken or cut
If the cord is cut or badly damaged this will stop power from getting to the vacuum. Immediately unplug the cord in order to protect yourself from electrical shock. It’s best to contact Customer Service at 1-800-798-7398 to talk about possible replacement and repair options.
Suction motor thermostat needs to be reset
This vacuum has a thermostat to prevent any damage to the suction motor from overheating. This causes the vacuum to shut off until the suction motor has cooled down. In order to reset the suction motor thermostat the following steps need to be taken:
- Push down the switch to the “Off” position
- Unplug the vacuum
- Check for a clog or obstruction in the hose or filter; unclog the hose and replace the filter if needed
- Wait 45 minutes for the vacuum to cool down
- Plug the Vacuum in; push down the switch to the “I-On” position to start the vacuum
- If the vacuum still does not start, contact Customer Service at 1-800-798-7398
Loss of suction
The vacuum does not pick up any dirt when being used.
Dust Cup Full
If the Dust cup is full, there is nowhere for the dirt to go when vacuuming. To fix the problem, remove the dust cup by the handle at the top and empty the dust cup.
Filters needs cleaning
If you haven’t washed your filters recently, it may be why your vacuum has lost suction. To clean the filters, remove the dust cup and pull out the 2 filters that sit below it. Then remove the HEPA filter at the face of the vacuum by lifting the latch holding it in place. Rinse the filters with water until the water runs clear. Let the filters dry completely before putting the back in the vacuum. If the vacuum still doesn’t pick up dirt, you may need to replace the filters. Check out the HEPA Filter replacement guide and the Foam Filter replacement guide.
Blockage in the vacuum
If the vacuum is not picking up any dirt or debris, there may be something blocking the airway.
There are three main areas that you can check for clogs:
- Behind the brush roller
- The hose
- The dust cup air duct
To check for a clog behind the brush roller:
- Lay the vacuum down
- Use a Flathead screwdriver to turn the latches holding the hose opening in place
- Check for a clog around the area where the brush roller spins
If there is no clog there, the next step is to check for a blockage in the hose:
- Press the handle release button to access the hose attachment of the vacuum
- Check for clogs at both ends of the hose
Lastly, check the the dust cup air duct:
- Remove the dust cup
- Check the air duct behind it
Suction Motor is going bad
Its best to make sure there are no clogs in the hoses or underneath the panel where the roller brush spins and the filters are clean. If none of these solutions solve the problem then its possible the suction motor may be going bad. Its best to contact Shark to talk about your options for replacement or repair.
Roller brush is not spinning
The vacuum has power but the roller brush is not spinning
Roller brush switch is off
Check to make sure the vacuum is switched to the correct mode. The switch should be in the Power and Brushroll mode to make the roller spin. If it is in just the power mode the roller will not move. The brushroll indicator light should be green when working. The brush will only spin when the vacuum is tilted back. If the vacuum is still not working the switch that detects if the vacuum is tilted back may need replacing.
Debris on the brush
Remove debris from the brush to allow motion. The debris may be pieces of string or hair wrapped around the brush restricting movement. Unplug the vacuum and use scissors to cut the debris from the roller and pull it out with your hands to allow the brush to spin.
Disengaged nozzle
For the roller brush to spin the nozzle needs to be completely attached, even if the vacuum has power. Make sure the connection is tight by pressing down on the handle to improve the connection. If that does not work, unplug the vacuum and disconnect the nozzle. Remove blockages and debris from the nozzle. Reconnect the nozzle before turning on vacuum again.
Broken Belt
The belt is used to spin the roller brush. If the roller is not spinning the belt may be broken or worn out and needs replacing. Use the Roller Belt replacement guide.
Wheels are not working
The vacuum will not roll across the ground
Debris is in the way of wheels
If the wheels can still move but are very rough and hard to push, try examining around the wheels for hair, dirt, or some other item that could be locking one or both wheels in place and creating resistance. If there is no visible blockages, try pulling the wheels off and further inspect them along with testing to see if they will spin freely while removed. If not, and there are no visible blockages, then the wheels need to be replaced because there bearings could be old and stuck.
Pin is bent
If the wheels do not move at all or are very hard to push then it could be that the pin is bent. Remove the bottom panel from the vacuum and look at the wheel pin for damage or bends, including damage to the plastic around the pin that could be obstructing the wheel from turning.
Vacuum won’t stay standing up
The vacuum handle falls when left straight up
Latch is Broken
If the vacuum will not stay up, check to make sure it is being lifted all the way up to its locking point by pushing the handle toward the front of the vacuum until it stops. If the vacuum continues to fail you should check the latch by taking off the top panel of the vacuum and look for obstructions or broken plastic in the vicinity of the latches and make sure the latches are still there and functioning.

piece of junk, less than a year old and the roller won't work. I checked the belt, it's intact, the motor and roller aren't bound up, they move freely yet the roller won't spin despite the green indicator light being on. JUNK. I checked the harness connecting the motor to the board etc, just stopped working, JUNK. If it's a broken sensor or bad wiring... screw this Shark brand junk, never again. WORTHLESS JUNK.

All 3 brush position lights are flashing on mine today. Trying to figure out the cause and or solution.

Mine is less then 2 months old and I’ve already had to have the brush roller head replaced. $35.00. Shark does this on purpose so you have to spend money. Now I’m facing the same issue a week later, will the new roller head. Only this time it’s $75.00 for a new roller head. They intentionally made it this way so you couldn't fix it yourself.

I agree. It has great suction when it worked. Only 1 month old and roller is not moving and no indicator light. This is rediculas. Alot of problems that should be addressed and fixed by shark. This is my 3rd replacement. Will never waste my money again on a shark. Piece of crap.

I fixed mine the wires were broken where the machine bends at the wheels

shark nv22ln26 beater bar spins when first engaged and then stops. I dismantled and cleaned head unit and it still spins when cleaning head is pushed down and then stops. I suspect switch that engages beater bar may be defective or sticking.

Mine does exactly the same; cleaned everything...no blockage. As soon as the roller switch is engaged it runs for a few seconds and then cuts out and the light turns red.

Mine was doing the same as everyone else said. I realized there was a clog in the handle. Once I cleaned that out, it now works like new.

I had checked the flexible hose on my machine, but, after I saw your post I detached the tube from the handle, and saw a blockage there. Thanks.

My rotator brush spins only when the vacuum is standing upright, as soon as you tilt it back the power to the motor cuts out. there is no clog or resistance to the brush, it’s clearly an electrical issue. anyone have any idea what’s wrong or how to fix it? email me @ tiffymaegan@gmail.com

Hi, me too.. We’ve taken it apart and all was well. Like you, the brush will turn when it’s at a standing position.
laelpowell -
We took the vacuum apart, nothing wrong. My vacuum also will run the brush bar when it is standing, and as soon as I push the handle part back, it stop.s.
laelpowell -
Beeter brush will only activate when the vacuum body is tilted to the right. The green light stays on when I’m active position. Odd. Email me if anyone knows what I can do to fix it. Serval128@comcast.net

My shark rotator professional roller will not stay engaged, i’ve checked the roller and belt they are fine, when I press the brush roll button if it engages it does not stay on if it even engages the brush, any suggestions??
Tim Crutchfield - 回复
I fixed the Shark. Brush was not spinning. Had to take it apart a few times and check internet suggestions. The switch was not “clicking” that indicates that the handle was pulled out of the upright position. As soon as I loosened the small green switch assembly from the white plastic holder, something let loose and the switch began to click as needed. This fix requires the small front wheels to be removed as there are screws behind them. 8 screws total I believe to seperate the brush assembly. Also easier to do this repair with the brush assembly disconnected from the power head.

Barton Torbert -
I fixed the Shark. Disconnect brush assembly from the handle. Remove all screws to separate the plastic brush assembly. Including the two screws behind the small front wheels. As soon as I loosened the small green switch from the white plastic frame, the switch began to “click”. This switch let’s the vacuum know that the handle is pulled back and not in the upright position.
jjzsnowski - 回复
Can you send pictures of the small green switch? Is it in the roller assembly, or some where else? I’ve taken my vacuum apart several times. I tried loosening the small green assembly in the roller section, but no roller activity. I am definitely getting suction, but no roller activity.

Turned the vacuum off to empty the canister. Reattached it and the roller brush would Not turn. Took it apart; no clog, clean roller brush, belt is fine, switch is on, wand is attached securely, canister is attached securely, all filters are clean… and it still doesn’t work. Hey SHARK….. does anyone over there have any answers?
Jim Leonard - 回复
The switch to activate the brush motor when the handle is lowered from full upright position fails. I fiddled with it (cleaning and such) and got it to work intermittently. Them I removed the switch, connecting the wires permanently. This works ok as we now just use the brush switch next to the power switch. I suppose you could order a replacement, but I needed mine to work that day. Good luck!

My vacuum will not stay stood in the upright position, the only advice given on here is to check the latch is broken, I can hear it clicking into place but it still won’t stay up.
you cannot see the latches anywhere unless I start taking it apart, this is only 3 months old and surely it should be better built than this

When my vacuum is powered on but standing upright it acts like it is dead. If I disengage the body from the floor piece the beater brushes start to roll and it kicks in, though it is definitely not as loud as it used to be like it’s only half working? But if put it back in the upright position, like you would to use the wand along the wall, it does nothing?? I’ve cleaned out every single hose and the filters and it still doesn’t work in the upright position???

All of a sudden when I engage the roller it trips the circuit breaker. Never did it before. The vacuum starts fine in the upright position, use the foot to set the vacuum tie work oops tripped the circuit. I can use the hose with the floor/carpet attachment, but that doesn't do the job of deep cleaning. Anyone with the same problem? Next step is to check out the vacuum's electronics

Take the cover off like you are replacing the belt. To the right of the motor is a green switch. Take the screw off. There is two red wires. Cut them and attach the two wires and use electrical tape. Doing this made my the motor and roller spin again.

My brush won’t spin on the bare floor setting, but it spins fine on the other settings. Any thoughts on that?

I thought it wasn't supposed to on bare floors otherwise it throws stuff back instead of sucking up. I do not have a bare floor setting on my shark and if the roller brush is engaged it throws anything bigger that dust backwards on bare floors. On my eureka that does have a bare floor setting, it does shut off the brush roller

I over heated my vacuum today it’s the 3rd time I’ve used it I unclogged everything emptied the canister cleaned all the filters with my other vacuum and let it sit for an hour still won’t turn on I’ve the same thing happen with my Eureka which I’ve had for 10 years and still sucks hard enough to rip up throw rugs unlike the shark which I guess is good but how is this thing have the “best suction” yet gets beat and out ran by a $70 Eureka. At least when I over heat my Eureka It will restart after it’s cooled in 30 minutes. So I pay $200 more for something that breaks after it’s used 3 times but my $70 is still going strong after 10 yes TEN YEARS…..

I just read these troubleshooting tips because the roller brush stopped functioning. I saw one tip I hadn’t already tried. So I disconnected the nozzle, reconnected it and pushed down to make sure it was completely connected. Voila! it started to spin again. Easy peasy. I’ve had my Shark Navigator since 2012 and this is the only malfunction it’s ever had. Still happy with my purchase after 8 years of heavy use.

Has anyone experienced when your roller gets caught on a cord, the motor stops and you just clear the blockage and turn it back on, it seems the brush does not turn as fast after that? Its like a loss of forcefulness from the roller and motor?

I checked the units for loose wires,
All okay. Pushed the clicker button while plugged do-nothing.
Also, light doesn't work !

No customer service. I will never purchase another Shark.
My machines are less than a year old.
Inferior motors to cut back on cost.
I agree, units are junk.

I have to make AMENDS.
Previously I wrote my twobbacs did not work, as the brushes on both units failed. After looking things over everything looked good, so I put the blame on inferior Motors.
I have to eat crow and admit it was all user error.
After continuing to check on line I came across an article that stated vac should be in carpet mode and brush does not spin unless handle is in the rear position, as if your vacuuming.
My apologies to Shark company and readers alike !

When brush won't spin? Check that the wiring in the brush assembly, is routed around the tilt indicator switch! If the wiring is routed thru the switch? Not only does the wiring get pinched, but it also interferes with the tilt switch! I just discovered if ya use the lift away feature, it makes year down and assembly sooooo much easier!!!

I have an NV500 and the bristle brush randomly stopped spinning today. I took it apart and checked the belt, bearings, and electrical connections and all of them seemed fine. So I kept digging and found that the little green switch near the hinge wasn't returning to its uncompressed location. I took it out and cleaned it up and now everything works again.
Tl; dr: Check the green switch with the metal tab.

I think I killed my brush roller on my shag carpet. I literally just got my vac 3 weeks ago. I also noticed it picks up great on hard sufaces in forward motion but not backwards. I housekeep for a living and most homes I clean have a shark but the more expensive models. I must say the better models do a fantastic job but you have to stay on top of cleaning the filters and emptying the canister. I'd still use this brand over others.

I faced a similar issue with my vacuum. It would only work when tilted and shut off when upright. After ensuring there weren't any clogs and checking other parts, I was puzzled.
I reached out to the vacuum manufacturer, and they informed me that the machine has two motors. One of the motors might've overheated.
The solution? Unplug and leave it for about 90 minutes to cool down and reset. Sure enough, after waiting, it worked flawlessly. So, before considering repairs or a new purchase, give your vacuum some time to "rest" and reset!
