Hisense R6 Series Dimmed backlighting

Hi all. I’ve had this Hisense 55R6040G tv for about 2 years now and all of a sudden the brightness has drastically fallen. The backlight still comes on but won’t change brightness. It appears as if it’s set to like 30 percent instead of 100. If I change the the brightness to lower levels it will get darker, but if I increase it after 30 percent it doesnt get any brighter. I’m hesitant to think the LEDs are bad as the screen seems evenly lit but just dim.I’ve done all the power cycling tricks and even let it sit for 3 hours unplugged. Factory reset. Even went into the secret menus to up the brightness with no success. What do you experts think?

Update (02/27/2023)

I just took apart the unit and it appears that 2 capacitors are bulging a slight bit which may be the cause https://imgur.com/a/m7IJH4t when comparing to another image from someone selling the main board it looked normal and not bulged.

Update (03/07/2023)

Replacing the Capacitors Fixed the dimming issue. It appears the affect the R6 series of the Hisense TV’s

The Capacitors are 10uF 350v capacitors

If your board looks like this which is shared between the R6 series and potentially other series then this will fix your issue. https://imgur.com/a/4jYFaFU

Thanks for the post AND fix.

I’m having the exact same issue. I had previously taken the back cover off but never noticed those capacitors were bulged the exact same.

So I ordered up some Nichicon replacements for the 10uF and the 1uF as they’re both the same brand and will probably fail too. A “while you’re in there” fixing.

Mo Mo those two capacitors are definitely past their prime :-) They do need to be replaced. Replace the third one in your picture as well and check the two diodes. I would replace those as well. Total cost maybe USD $5 and an hour work. Give it a try and let us know if the replacement fixed this issue. Simple through-the-hole soldering. You got this. Repair is War on Entropy

Thanks for the suggestion. Not familiar with testing the diodes. I have a basic multimeter. My soldering skills are not the best. but going to practice on other boards before I attempt the repair. I hate the direction that repair is going. Hope to keep it alive. Thanks again! Do you have any suggestions on great quality capacitors. The one that was on the main board is rated for 5k hours. would like to find something like that or exceeds it as I like to sleep with my tv on lol

Mo Mo can you see what brand they were? There are some bottom tier caps that are being used by Hisense, Vizio, TCL etc. I prefer Rubycon or Kemet caps and get mine from Mouser.com. Their shipping is high and for a few parts like you need, shipping will be doubling the price. Check your diodes by using something like this video Great idea about practicing on some old stuff. Lots of flux and good solder and proper heat will get you there. If you are somewhere in South Texas holler and I help you out. :-)

Thanks oldturkey the current brand is capxon I may just use the Rubycon as I’ve seen plenty of them online. Any recommendations for a good soldering iron and or set. I have a cheap dollar store soldering iron with some cheap dollar store solder. Unfortunately I’m too far from you but I appreciate the offer. Thanks again!

@Mo Mo Capxon was really heavy involved with the capacitor issues a decade ago. Luckily that got resolved and yes, they do make some good ones. They still have the low tier that saves some pennies which makes manufacturers (Vizo, TCL, Hisense etc) use those. Stick with nothing less than 105deg C caps and no low ESR caps. Rubycon will not be disappointing. With a through-the-hole soldering, it is okay to use an inexpensive iron. You have the control off it and just make sure that you see the solder melt etc. Your solder might be okay as well, but that will depend on the composition of it. Do not forget to use plenty of flux.

Thank you oldturkey! I replaced the capacitors and all is good. Apparently I ended up seeing videos in my YouTube feed days later with hisense backlight issues mainly caused by these capacitors if you have a roku tv based hisense, then a 10uf 350v capacitor will correct this issue.

You’ll probably never see this but thank you. I have the same tv, same issue. Was down to nearly 10% brightness. I’ve never done circuit work in my life but I bought capacitors and a soldering iron for $20 on Amazon and after 20 minutes of work the tv is back to its original brightness! Saved me hundreds of dollars. I was ready to scrap it and it’s now as good as new.

@eric997 and that is how it gets done :-) Awesome! I like it when people actually fix their devices instead of replacing it and you got some money left in your pocket. Welcome to iFixit :-)

It sounds like your TV might be having an issue with its backlighting. It could be a problem with the LEDs, but since the screen seems to be evenly lit it's more likely an issue with the settings or circuitry.

It's worth trying a few basic troubleshooting steps before taking it in for repairs. First, try changing the picture mode and check if that helps adjust brightness levels. If that doesn't work, you can also try resetting the TV to factory settings or updating its software.

If none of those solutions work, then it may be time to take your TV in for repairs or contact customer service for further assistance.

Thank you for the suggestions unfortunately none of those things worked out as it appears it's a component level issue.
