The first thing I'd do is to uninstall the biometric scanner. Restart the OS twice. (What OS are you using?) after that I would reinstall the reader on a different USB port to make sure that you have the new drivers as well as the software required by your reader. Should this still not work, I believe you might just have to get a new one. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

If the cause is a corrupt drive then the driver must be completely uninstalled.

This means using one of the third party uninstallers and registry cleaners (or manually in the registry if you know your way around).

I use IObit Uninstaller for software part, Windows Device Manager for the actual core driver (but this does not get all remnants such as settings, etc) and so then PrivaZer or Ccleaner to mop up. IObit ASC can sometimes help as well. Then reboot and run the cleaners again.

Then reboot and let Windows 10 find the drive then reinstall the HP biometric scanner software from their web site.

I’ve had this problem with video drivers and touchpads. Some of the above may be ‘overkill’ but I like to error on the side of caution. The above has always worked for me. Only once was it defective hardware and so, of course, did not work. But I was then 99% sure it was hardware. As for the1% ? Well you never know!

The answer does not address the issue. The fingerprint scanner is built into the laptop and no longer works with Win10.
