How to replace a failed hard drive

I received a S.M.A.R.T. warning on my ASUS Q552UB Notebook last week. I would like to swap out the hard drive with a replacement HDD. I need to figure out the dimensions of the factory HDD so I can buy the right sized replacement. I also need to know what tools are necessary to remove the existing HDD. I'm probably a half step above novice level but I follow instructions well and would love to do this myself.

Update (09/10/2017)

I see this here: Asus X551CA Hard Drive Replacement, though I'm afraid I don't know whether it's similar enough to my model. I assume the steps are probably the same, but I'll still need to nail down the HDD dimensions.

From what you have shown, it looks like it is a standard 2.5" Laptop hard drive.

Buy either the Samsung SSD, Seagate SSHD, or WD 2.5" and you should be ok.

Before you put in the hard drive, and if you can still use your computer, each of these companies will have a downloadable software that lets you directly copy/clone your hard drive to the new one if you can connect it via USB.

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-inch-Drive...

or this:

Thank you! ASUS confirmed for me that my notebook has a hard drive that's 2.5" in size and 9mm in thickness. I'm thinking of purchasing this hard drive, though I don't know whether its dual process will complicate things:

If it does, then I suppose I'll get this one:

I can still use the computer and apparently these hard drives come with the cloning program I'll need.

The black has a noticeably better performance over the blue in terms of longevity and read/write speed.

The cloning software is here https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p..., and you need a USB 2.5 SATA adapter. Plug the new on in to the adapter via USB then clone from the old to the new. Then Install the new hard drive.

Thanks! I've gotten the replacement hard drive and formatted it using Disk Management. My computer recognizes it, but the Manufacturer data doesn't say Western Digital specifically (just "Standard Disk Drives") and so I can't get the Acronis True Image WD Edition Software to run. Any ideas?

Google around for Acronis Bootable Media. This should boot a generic Acronis without a hard drive brand check.

Thanks. I'm sorry, I don't know what that means or what I'm looking for. I think I can pay for an upgrade through WD and be able to use that software without verifying the manufacturer. So far as I can tell, everything I see for Acronis Bootable Media costs money, too, so I figure I may as well use the program I already have installed.
