Troubleshooting
Find out what is ailing your GameCube using the Nintendo GameCube Troubleshooting page.
Background
The Nintendo GameCube was released in November 2001. It was the first Nintendo gaming system to use an optical disc drive instead of the more expensive game cartridges previous Nintendo consoles used.
On November 19, 2006, Nintendo released its next console, the Nintendo Wii, with the original model (RVL-001) able to run GameCube games. Later models lacked this capability.
Identification
The Nintendo GameCube, easily identifiable by its boxy shape, originally came in two colors, black and purple, though later units were available in a wider variety of colors. On the front, it has four controller ports and two memory card slots. The sides each have a gridded box with a screen that allows air to flow through the device and keep it cool. The back has a variety of cable ports, including power and video cable ports. The GameCube also sports a handle for easy transportation.
There are 2 main revisions of the Nintendo GameCube, under the code name DOL-001 and DOL-101. DOL-001 had 2 Output Ports - one digital and one analog for video output and also had 2 serial ports and 1 HI Speed port on the bottom of the console. But, on the later revision, DOL-101, the digital AV port and Serial Port 2 were removed due to the fact that they were rarely used by customers, as the Serial Port 2 was intended for developers and usage of the digital AV out required a hard-to-obtain component cable only sold through Nintendo's website, due to which less than one percent of GameCube owners actually used the port. Nintendo therefore removed them in the second model to reduce the console's cost.
