My trackpad will not click

I took my MacBook to the tech to replace its swollen battery.
When i took it back, i noticed that the trackpad isn’t able to click on its lower left corner, whilst all the rest worked perfectly. I must say that it was working fine despite the battery swelling before it was replaced, so I have a feeling that it wasn’t put together correctly… or not?
What do you think, might that be a trackpad malfunction (and if so, how can I check it) or something else

When a trackpad is damaged, does that mean that its not doing the clicking movement at all, or the click occurs but will not respond as an action

Depending on the series you can encounter different symptoms!

The older models used a hinge along the top edge, at the bottom edge was a blister switch which would create the click action.

The newer models like this one uses a hepatic feedback system so the applied pressure is sensed by the touch surface and then the hepatic engine kicks in to give you the click action. The action signal may not get sent to the logic board.

Try running the onboard diagnostics to see if an error popped.

Thanks Dan, but what makes you believe that the battery is bad and needs replacement? I ask so I can understand 😉

@genik - It’s a matter of space! Unlike the older mechanical Trackpad design which needed a bit of room under so it could flex into the void, the newer Touchpad design can encounter a damaged cable when the center battery cells swell up pressing on them.

Besides diagnostics also points to a battery issue as well, it gave us PPP007 error.

Batteries fail in different ways! Sometimes it’s clear, the cycle count as well as it’s power is low. In other cases, we get confusing data! So the more common issues don’t lead us the the problem.

Here we have age and you likely leave the system plugged in so the battery is under constant trickle charge. This can lead to a battery which gases up. The batteries casing is designed to prevent these gases to leak out so we encounter a swollen battery which can press on parts as well as distort parts like the Touchpad.

The diagnostics that I’ve uploaded are with the new battery that is purchased and installed. That’s why it seems strange to me.

So u figure that the new battery is faulty due to the diagnostics and the coconut battery result?

@genik - The diagnostics tells us the power output of the battery is not correct.

Take a picture of the battery similar to Step39 in this guide Retina MacBook 2015 Battery Replacement so we can see all four cells clearly.

Based off the info you've provided, it is likely that the trackpad was damaged internally by the swollen battery. For a replacement:

#guardian10 if the trackpad was damaged by the swollen battery wouldn’t it be strange not to function on its lower left corner? As far as I recall the battery isn’t located down there, in the lower left corner of the trackpad. 😐

@genik - A swollen battery can also add stresses within the case and distort the Touchpad (trackpad). Which can cause it to not respond cleanly. As the face is glass it can also crack.
