Well it could be a number of things first thing that comes to mind is that when you say it heats up is it when its on? Also do you see any icon or anything on the screen at start? If you don’t see anything on your ipad air it could most likely be a backlight which has gone out and may need to be replaced and since it heats up it may need a new battery since it shows symptoms of failing.

Thanks for the answer! No I can't see anything other than that it heats up att one spot while charging.

Connect your iPad to the computer and enter DFU mode by press/hold home button and lock button for 5-8 seconds, then release lock button while keep holding home button, after a few seconds you should get a prompt in iTunes - try restore iPad in DFU mode and see it can solve the issue.
