Yet another wet iPod touch

My 2nd gen went through the wash. Amazingly, a week in rice and it powered up. The problem I now have is that the touch exhibits erratic battery level and when it goes to sleep, the clock/date resets back to 1969. My first thought is bad battery, but a second opinion is welcome. I opened up the pod and there is a tiny bit of corrosion on some of the screw heads but nowhere else that i can find. Will a bad logic board (charging circuit?) present similar symptoms?

Additional detail: at first, the pod would run for a little while unplugged, now it shuts off immediately after being unplugged, even if the battery indicator reads full. also, sometimes the pod will go through a few aborted reboots when i plug in (many flashes of the apple over and over).

Will a new battery get me there, or does this look like more extensive damage?

OP here.

Replaced battery, works okay- but gets pretty hot when charging, wifi kills the battery FAST, and a full charge is only good for an hour of music. There is probably some other damage- but the pod is sort of useable.

it was fun re-soldering the battery. you better have a steady hand :)

glad to hear the dry-it-in-rice trick helped you revive your iPod touch.

from the symptoms, my first guess would be the battery is damaged and needs to be replaced, do you have access to a voltmeter to check its voltage when charging/fully charged? I guess it's also possible there's still water inside the battery or elsewhere causing trouble - it can take a long time for electronics to dry out...

It could also be the charging circuit, but without a known good battery it may be difficult to confirm. perhaps replacing the battery first is a relatively inexpensive first step. Good luck

It could be the battery because when you remove the battery the device automattically loses date/time etc.. I think you must open your iPod up and remove some parts and either put them in rice or use a hairdryer/heat gun. Then change the battery (if you havent). Hope I helped you!

Changing the battery will not do anything, you`ll just lose money... What you should actually do, is take your iTouch apart and do a board clean, use some kind of acid... Remove all oxidation cause by water in contact with electricity. Good Luck!

Please do not use any ACID on the logic board. If you need to clean any board, follow this guide, Electronics Water Damage and definitely change the battery. The Lithium-ion polymer batteries and liquids do not get along at all.....Oxidation is NOT caused by water getting in contact with electricity, Oxidation is the interaction of oxygen and any other material, i.e. the oxidation of iron can result in rust. So looks to me like your answer is absolutely wrong....but nice try. Better luck next time.
