Replaced lens and fixed problem

I have a Sony Cyber shot DSC-P200. Recently the live image stopped showing on the screen but could view past photo’s. Purchased a remanufactured lens which fixed my problem. My question is does anyone know what might be in the lens to cause such a problem.

@chets the CCD imager which has failed.

CCD failure is very common for digital cameras made during 2005-2007. Your camera should have given you an error code (E:61:XX) if the iris motor would have failed.

Thanks for the response. No error code and could you help understand what the CCD imager is and where it is?

Very simplified, a CCD imager (as well as CMOS imager) convert light into electrons. Check on here for more reading about that http://www.specinst.com/What_Is_A_CCD.ht... Post some pictures of your lens assembly etc. so we can hopefully show you where it is located. Even the image of the replacement might work for as long as it shows all sides. While I agree that the imager could cause this problem. I fail to see how replacing the lens assembly "fixed" the problem since the imager is NOT part of the lens. I have seen failures of the iris that did not trigger the error since the motor moved as expected while the actual iris did not.

That will depend on where the replacement was purchased. All the lenses I've replaced (of course it was not 100's etc.) had the CCD imager already installed. Hence the request to see what the OP received.

There is no way to know for sure without examining the defective lens assembly, but…

I know of cases where the internal iris has stuck. If it sticks in the “open” position, the camera will appear to work, but may have washed out pictures/videos. If stuck in the “closed” position, you will see black in both cases. In your case, what appears to be nothing showing on the screen may be a stuck iris in the closed position. Since these lens assemblies are often sealed, there is no way to actually “fix” them unless you have access to a clean room.

Hope this helps,

Dan

Thanks for your comments. The screen was essentially black with a slight overall glow so your comment about a stuck close iris makes sense. As to a stuck iris, is this the mechanism that closes over the lens when the camera is turned off and is visible from the outside or is there something further inside the lens? The replacement lens I purchased is a refurbished lens that I got from ebay.

The iris is inside of the lens assembly. The mechanism that closes over the lens when shut down is usually just called the lens cover.

Is it possible that what you are calling an imager others may call a sensor? If so, the sensor was not in the refurbished lens, the hole was covered with masking tape. I transferred the sensor from the old lens. Now, on another issue, I mistakenly canceled the email replies which I did not want to do. Can anyone tell me how to undo that? Again thanks for all the replies, they have all been most informative.
