My iPhone died and I need to get the pictures!

Alright, seeing as how I am always answering questions here, I thought I'd reverse the roles here for a bit of fun.

I have an iPhone 5S that has been working great for years. I changed the battery a year or so ago but otherwise the phone is pretty much original.

I swear to (insert your deity here), the phone was just on my desk, doing nothing other than being on the table (kinda like the nightstand thing :>) and it suddenly shut off and started boot looping. It's been dropped here or there over time but nothing major recently and there has been no contact with water. Connecting it to iTunes gives me an Error 50 and it is very warm.

I haven't opened it yet but I thought I would solicit some ideas and we'll see who comes closest to the solution (@mayer, @oldturkey03, @rany, @benjamen50, @arbaman, @teetopp @thinksmartpc, @juax, @joesipaq, @tech_ni and anyone else...)

P.S. Yes, I have a backup :>)!

UPDATE (2018/06/29)

This is weird...I thought I would give it one last chance today before opening it up. I powered up the phone and it booted. iTunes would recognize it but it would not complete a backup, saying the iphone wasn't connected !?! I restarted iTunes and then everything worked properly. I used my phone all day without issue.

Very strange indeed. Thanks for everyone's suggestions...I was hoping we could collaboratively have fun diagnosing this phone. Hopefully it will die again soon :>).

@refectio I'd think it'll be an issue with U1_RF (Baseband IC) I'd have to confirm this with a real expert I know from Montreal ;-))

完成的

Despite consensus goes towards Baseband, I'd give a try at a known good battery, you know how these aftermarket batteries might do all sorts of weird things =;) In case you don't manage to get a clue, my cousin told me that a friend of his fixed his bootlooping iPhone with a hair dryer..just evenly warm up the phone and thank (insert your deity here) meantime :)

I would think it is BB related too. But can you hit me up on messenger? It is better to have a reactive convo instead of posting answers. My info is on my profile page.

From what I've seen reballing baseband IC seems to be one of the hardest things to do in microsoldering, could this fix the issue?

I suppose it is close to long screw damage repair.

完成的

@rany but then the rest of the team is going to miss the discussion :>) @ refectio thanks my friend for involving "the team" After all it is @refectio and @rany that are the experts in this field of repair, almost deity like themselves :-))

Alright guys, now we can't just "assume" it's something without a test. I would strongly encourage to take the unit to a board specialist to test the board to determine which component may be compromised, or having an minor breakdown.

Update* (because apparently I was AFK for too long)

It's awesome your device is working again! To prevent losing data, I would strongly encourage to keep a back up of device, especially if you have some important data in it. Make sure to keep your back up active on Icloud and/or set up your main PC to auto sync over the wi-fi. Here is an article forSync over Wifi

Thanks Juax. As you'll note, I said in the question that I had a backup :>). The whole purpose of this was to have some fun troubleshooting the phone collaboratively but the darned phone started working again!!

All is fun! In my region, I have noted the amount of people that forget to back up data, so I always provide a solution for a better peace of mind.

Excuse the fact that my answer may already be listed here, I didnt read all the answers, but watching a few episodes of iPad Rehab on Youtube and the tri star going bad seems to cause a lot of funky power issues. I have two iPhone 5's that had similar issues before going completely out. I swapped batteries and charge ports multiple times. I would assume it's the tri star chip, however I have no micro soldering experience.

Connect it to your computer with the latest version of Itunes, then hold down the power and home button down for 10 secs. Then release the power button while holding home and it should show a screen on Itunes

If you cannot restore it try taking it into an apple store and let them have a look ai it.

That's really horrible advice. You don't want an Apple genius to touch your device if data is anywhere near important to your. Their first reflex is to wipe and restore your device, and often brick it.

完成的

@rany Hahahah, right, just finished reading a horror story about a MBP with a final 460$ bill..and they call them "genious"

Once when younger I was told a story that ended like: You can call a donkey a racing horse, nonetheless it'll not win any race :D

完成的

@rany @arbaman that is why we have iFixit. Similar to your story, I am more familiar with the "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig" ;>) @connor2003 The "genius" is not always (almost never)what we think they should be. They are there to achieve one goal and one goal only. Making money for Apple. Around here we try to help people to fix their own devices, not by sending them to a dealer/manufacturer etc. if it can be avoided

Sorry I'm a noob when it comes to apple repair ;-)
