Security Privacy replacement of screen

My screen came with the "Security Privacy" option on this HP 845 G8. The touch screen function is disabled. By design, I've never liked the viewing angles that it forces on the user. Now that I don't require the privacy screen nearly as much in my work, is it possible to change this screen out for a "standard" and/or "touch screen" version? This might be better asked of HP. Otherwise all is working just fine but just am curious to know what my options are.

I don't see a "HID - compliant touch screen" entry in Device manager. I don't believe the "Privacy Screen" function is integrated into a "touch screen" on this HP Notebook. This would then suggest that if I was to replace my screen there would have to be two different models for me to choose from.

Can anyone confirm this? What are the part #'s of each ?

Thanks for helping out.

Thanks for any help

What's the "Product number" of the laptop as shown on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop?

Usually it is next to the model number on the label.

Also re the touch screen - in Device Manager check if there is an "Others" category as it may be there. If there's no Others category, click on View → Show hidden devices and check if it appears somewhere else in Device manager, where it shouldn't.

Hi @tarzan1812

Just verifying that you tried turning off the privacy screen feature by pressing the designated action key on the keyboard (see image below for symbol on the key)?

If it has a touch screen you could try enabling it in Device Manager.

To get to Device Manager in Win10/Win11, press the Win key + x key (both together) and click on the Device Manager link on the menu box that opens.

When in Device Manager scroll down to Human Interface Devices → click on the > symbol to the left of the category, to expand the list right click on the HID - compliant touch screen entry → Enable device follow any prompts and then restart the laptop in the normal manner and once restarted check if the touchscreen works OK

It can be done, yes - I did it on a 840 G6 when the SV panel was cracked and the cost was bordering in the price of a good computer without SV - SV also uses a proprietary display cable which cannot interchange with the 2k/4k 40-pin panels as it's wired to dim the panel, not run a high res LCD. You swap it like a standard display and the function dies as the key no longer triggers SV and defaults to a standard key. The cables aren't worth enough to bother recovering and selling them on. The housing is the same, the cable and panel are the whacky parts. Later machines like yours often use an ALS, which will probably work with a non SV panel but they never really shipped with it so you'd potentially need to swap the webcam out too. Get the 1920x1080 400 nit panel (M52488-001) and a standard iDP cable (30 pin).

The most cost effective way is to buy a used assembly, or a donor laptop. These use one shot adhesive, so it's cleaner to replace the LCD as a assembly here. My 8 G1a has SureView and I didn't check closely, the viewing angles were the hint I screwed up (and I did everything I can to avoid it, and got stuck with it - I didn't check because 32GB/512GB in a shortage for $566). If that unit has a panel crack or a TAB issue (even a bad cable) it is 100% being deleted and getting the 1600p 400 nit panel if this 1200p SV panel fails on me. The feature is garbage, HP does it to appease corporate America. It's optional for a reason.
