Students: Read this before claiming any of my pages.
If you are part of a student group and claim one of my Device pages or Wikis, please respect these guidelines:
- Only change content that needs to be revised. Leave working content alone.
- If the original content is mostly usable, it's best to do a revision with the original content and formatting preserved as much as possible.
- If any information is removed without replacement, verify it is inaccurate if known by others. If there is not enough time to verify it, please understand I did so personally before including it.
- If you find any content you can't verify but think it needs work (Ex: Information on how to use a certain game controller on PC), revise it in its current form.
- If such content is included, only replace the parts that need replacement - do not remove it or change everything. I've personally tested it and know it to work.
- Do not change the following:
- Non-patrol reputation (This is set high enough to prevent problems for me and established users).
If these guidelines are respected, I do not have a problem with student edits. I know how I handle it is more unconventional then other pages since I will centralize common problems (and their workarounds if I know what to do) to make the information easier to find.
Regarding major changes beyond normal editing: If you are considering a major change, it's best to err on the side of caution and use the existing formatting and replace that section. In most cases, the content is (generally) laid out in such a way that the only requirements are a rewrite on the section that is being changed. In most cases, there is no need to completely rework how I wrote the original content.

回答“Why can’t I boot into windows with a new ssd”Does the SSD have an OS installed? If not, that’s typical with Asus laptops if it can’t find an operating system - although some do boot to a no bootable devices screen. Put a USB stick in the machine with the correct OS you want to install, and it should boot into that. If it doesn't, the page where you save or discard changes usually has a one-time boot menu as well as a dedicated function key.
回答“hard drive with a different OS”Be careful with these - they do not support SATA III natively! You need a drive with full I/II/III support - ideally. If you can find one with II/III support, you’ll probably be in okay shape. Unless you have a fully legacy compatible drive, it can be hard to find one unless you install a SATA controller card which supports it to bypass the nVidia northbridge. I can’t find anything direct from HP, but I strongly suspect it’s SATA II based on other boards known to be at that level. However, HP did have a bad habit of crippling their BIOSes Option ROM configuration in the name of “compatibility”. Find a cheap SSD with at least 256GB (or within the 256GB class, like 240/250GB) with SATA II support and install that on the DVD drive connector - USB externals are cheap.
回答“How to activate windows 7 on my device?”The fastest way with Windows 7 on a Dell is to find the OEM SLIC media - either through a site like eBay, a site like Internet Archive or a tool like the Helidoc Windows ISO download tool. I am not providing links here, but if you search for Windows ISO downloader and find the Helidoc link, you will find it. I have an image of a DVD I wrote to a USB stick, or if need be I can buy a small set of DL DVD+R media and write a DVD to boot the computer. The other way is retail media and activation, but this may no longer work since Win7 has been EOL since 1/14/2020 and Microsoft will not help you. The best route today is SLIC. For Windows 8, the key has to be integrated into the BIOS - and in many cases it doesn’t work to save it’s life. Best approach for Win8 OEM systems with the BIOS key is a custom OEM SetupComplete image (use NTLite) but this DOES REQUIRE a BIOS key. If you bought it on it’s own and it’s not part of the BIOS, you’ll need to enter it manually. The other issue is keys from shady 3rd party sites...
回答“Can I restore to factory defaults but keep Windows 10?”Unless you know the previous owner personally and they can vouch for the install being recoverable, erase the machine and start over. You just do not know unless they can say “We did this. It’s not an issue to erase the machine and not make a boot drive.” AND they don’t download who knows what online. Even then it’s better to be safe then sorry. Personally I would rather erase the drive and if you really needed it done, get you to the setup screen and turn the computer off. I may opt to not include a drive - especially if I “abandoned” it as a unfinished project because I got a deal on something better. For all you know it has malware that will survive the Windows factory reset procedure - nuke it and start over with a clean slate. For sale purposes, nuke and sell No OS (Win10 ready) or wipe it to the point you get to the initial setup after install.
回答“Hinge repair for hp envy x360”The problem with a lot of consumer laptops from HP is loose hinges are usually caused by the LCD housing being fatigued, and the plastic standoffs may be physically loose/failing so check for that to quickly know for sure - this is not an HP issue; rather a consumer grade issue. But yes, HP seems to be worse then others. That said, you can usually check the screws on the palmrest, and LCD assembly as well as it can sometimes be a tightness issue. If it’s okay and it continues to be an issue, the hinges are wearing out. Tightening them will help, but it’s better to replace them with new ones at that point. Refer to the HP service manual for disassembly instructions.
回答“I dropped my computer and now I see a disorted screen”You’re going to need a new LCD for this one - no way around it. Being school owned puts you in a major jam here since they may require HP to service it out of fear of voiding the warranty. That said, if you wanted to have the LCD replaced yourself shut up and say NOTHING! Deny it and make them prove it. Chromebooks are flimsy devices more often then not. What I would do is get an idea how much they pay - check HP and CDW to get an idea, or a similar model if discontinued. Try and compare against 4GB, since this is what yours likely has. It looks to be similar to this model from what I can find. If you’re okay with the risk of getting caught since you’re paying for it either way, you can find a display relatively easily once you know what model you really have - looks like a Chromebook 14. Keep the original assembly intact so they don’t suspect anything, and be careful.
回答“Notebook not turning on, after water dmg”Soak the board in 91-99% IPA and pray that it isn’t in need of a new motherboard. Your friend may have signed this machines death certificate by not cleaning it. Seeing as it no longer works and you do not know, assume it is acidic and clean accordingly. You’ll also need a new palmrest if that keyboard is plastic welded in - if not, reference the keyboard P/N. However, I will tell you this: Yank that hard drive if it has issues booting after cleaning the motherboard. A lot of the time, these Asus laptops do not like to boot if the drive has issues, and Toshiba drives like to fail within 1-2 years, or 2-3 with light usage; you do not know how heavily that drive was used unless you can check the POH with a tool that polls the SMART data. If that doesn’t work, you can always try to remove the CMOS battery but once you get that low with water damage the device is generally done for.
回答“Replacement Hinge and rear lcd panel”With major parts, it’s usually more practical to buy a junk laptop with the parts you need and then keep the rest for parts, especially when you need multiple parts for the laptop and it’s related to the LCD. Most of the time I add up the cost of parts for major work like this I can buy the whole laptop with a lot of missing parts because it’s got a major fault for very similar prices as I would for just the bare parts - if I’m paying more, I have a use for the rest of it. See if you can find a similar laptop to yours since the specs do not need to match in terms of the motherboard if it’s dead, and negotiate it down to a price you’re okay with. Once you have a good donor, then you can take the parts off you need and transplant your good LCD, webcam and LVDS cable. In some cases, the donor device is better enough if you can verify it’s perfectly functional or needs a minor repair, it’s better to part with the original.
回答“Why I cant install some of the windows 10 updates?”Without knowing *too* much, do you have one of those 32-64GB eMMC disaster laptops? A lot of the times you see this issue on those, and it’s due to the storage being full. In these cases, you’ll either have to install the update onto a USB stick or MicroSD card, or you’ll have to delete some contents to free up space to allow the updates to go through. These things shouldn’t exist but alas OEMs can’t resist a cheap Windows license even if it means they’re compromising their brand with hot garbage. You don’t see this stuff sold to professionals on the business side with Windows for good reason! The issue with many of these is you need to erase all of your data, so most of the time it’s better to keep a 64GB USB drive on hand to dump the updates onto for major upgrades like feature updates. Small updates usually aren’t an issue, but you do need to run Disk Cleanup once on a while to maintain the storage available.
回答“vertical lines on my mac screen”Lines on the display are due to a TAB failure most of the time, especially on machines with a easily serviced bare display. As such, you’re going to need to learn to live with it (if the parts cost too much), buy a donor with a good screen from the same model year, or buy a new display assembly for the laptop. However, the issue on 2016-present is you need to change both the display and T-CON board since they are integrated as a single unit. In order to provide a better answer and assistance, we need the specific model of your Mac.
