Dell Precision 7550, released in May 2020

New battery causing boot loop

I have bought a new battery from iFixit and after changing the battery everything works fine. Except it gets stuck in a bootloop and the fans turn on and off if I restart the machine without the power plugged in. The moment the power is plugged in it can start just fine and works. I also tested the old original battery which doesn't have this problem, which means there is something wrong with the aftermarket battery (EC handshake) after starting on battery power only.

@siddharths54888 did you let the new battery fully charge? Have you reset your system BIOS? What have you already checked?

Hi, thank you for your reply. Yes, I have fully charged it, discharged it and then fully charge it again for calibration of the battery as described by iFixit. The BIOS reset? I have not tried. I was wondering if this could do it but last I checked the bios was updated to the latest. Should I downgrade and upgrade? Is that what you mean?

@siddharths54888 as long as it is updated it should be ok. If you are running Windows as your OS have you checked the event viewer to see if there is anything in the logs that will give you a hint? I'd also be checking the Dell Power Manager to get as much information about the battery and to see if there is anything "odd" showing up.

Food for thought here. Clear the CMOS and then try the newer battery

Sounds like you have this solved, except EVERYTHING doesn't work fine. So, why would it boot loop with the new battery and not the old, assuming the old battery is just tired but powers it fine for a much reduced time.

The first possibility would be the battery. But the power control might have a fault. So, start with the easy stuff and talk to iFixit.

Thank you for you reply. I completely agree with you and it is the new battery. There is some magic things that dell does to prevent aftermarket supplier (my guess) because the original from dell is 3 times more expensive. I will ask iFixit support if they can fix this, or else this has to be returned.

If that is the problem it would be a good reason not to by Dell laptops. I did find info that indicated that may be true. I don't think BIOS would cause that, but I suppose anything is possible. Post back what the fix is. Thanks
