'Vintage' Rival Meat Slicer has broken retainer

Of course the suction cup has dried and cracked over time, but today the retainer to the blade has broken apart.

I see some expensive replacements (used) on eBay. What makes me afraid is most aren't showing same side as where mine broke.

Considering the way the part is assembled, I was wondering if it could be repaired.

Attached are pictures of one on eBay that seems intact.

@stanl If nothing else you can alwasy try one of the repalcements from ebay and see if it will work for your machine. Might just be a strightforward job. If not you can maybe return the part.

@stanl just trying to figure this out :-)

From what I understand B needs to be connected to C. Does it still have to rotate on C or can it be solid connection. If so, then just get somebody to tack it (B on C) with a small Mig or Tig weld. Most decent machine shops or even muffler shops can do this and will most likely not charge an arm and a leg. If it has to continue to rotate, use a small center punch and use it on the edge of the round shaft (with the blade on the shaft. That will create some "swelling" on the edge which should be enough to hold the "blade" on, yet still allow it to rotate on the shaft.

Update 08/28/2024

@stanl if it has to move then there are a couple of ways to do this. Like I said, you can do it by going around the shaft with a center punch and punch some failrly heavy marks on the edge. That will inrease the diameter slightly and might be enough to hold the blade on.

Block Image
  1. Just weld a short pin across the shaft to keep the blade on

  1. This one is a bit involved but it's the one that will yield the best results :-)
  2. A. Drill a hole in the center of the shaft. Tap it with a common thread. The size will depend on the size of the shaft. Don't go bigger then 1/2 the shaft diameter.
  3. B. Get a fender washer that fits well over the blade and has a center hole with a diameter that will be just a bit bigger than the threaded hole. Next attach the washer to the shaft with a machine screw that will be the same thread size as the center hole A.

All of this will depend on your resources. It really is not as complicated as my explanations :-)

Wow. I'm glad you said that. I had assumed it needed to be welded, but I just checked and I THINK it does need to rotate.

(A) screws onto the back which is a non moving back surface. (B) attaches to the slicer's front surface and makes it flush.

That said, I don't really understand the fix you're describing.

I guess that'd work, but I don't think I could pull off any of those answers.

Thanks though.

@oldturkey03 Yeah. Got a good deal on a used retainer and screw. I'll see how it works out.
