The laptop is not turning on.

``Okay, there’s a problem with my dads Dell Latitude E7440. The issue is basically that when it’s connected to power (doesn’t matter if it is a power cord or the battery) and i press the power button lights up, it stays on for a couple of seconds then the light is gone and the battery icon starts blinking and eventually turns off and everything goes black. There is no display during this and also the fan is not spinning :(. As i looked up some youtube tutorials on how to fix the issue, someone said that removing the CMOS battery and replacing it may solve it. My dad said it was a fried motherboard, and i think it is too. Tried removing the CMOS and booting up without it, same issue. Removing the ram and inspecting the motherboard. Nothing helped and the mobo looked perfectly fine, I really want to surprise him and give the laptop back working. Thought about buying a new motherboard but decided to reach out to you guys before doing something stupid.

Good morning,

My first step to troubleshooting this would be

  1. Disconnect battery and leave to the side
  2. Plug device in with known good cable (ensuring the correct AC 120/230 v)
  3. Power on device.

If this solves the problem then you can tell its starting with a dead cell, this laptop is rather old and is likely the battery has not been replaced.

When performing a cmos reset

  1. Remove main battery
  2. Remove charging cable
  3. Remove CMOS battery
  4. Hold down power button for 30 - 60 seconds
  5. Reconnect CMOS, main battery and charging cable

The idea of a CMOS reset is to drain the capacitors of residual charge to ensure the device is fully powered off.

After attempting these please reach back out.

I would also like to know, what LED indicators blink.

As well as the sequence and the amount of blinks. DELL has a rather extensive blink code system that can further diagnose this issue.

In my honest opinion it does not sound like a fried board as the device appears to function in a state capable of telling you something is wrong.

Tried the CMOS reset - still nothing, the battery is also fine, the issue keeps repeating even when the battery is out and power it with an external power adapter. I added a video that shows which LED’s are blinking.

Hi @tycflight

Did you press and hold the laptop's Power button for 30 seconds after you removed the cmos battery before reinserting it, you never mentioned if you did or not?

If not, ensure that the main battery is removed and then remove the cmos battery, hold the Power button for 30 seconds, reinsert the cmos battery (+ve on top as marked on battery), reinsert the main battery, connect the charger and check.

Looking at the diagnostic indicators for your model, it appears to be a memory problem.

I realize that you have reseated the ram but maybe you could try either removing 1 module at a time in case it is a faulty module or having only 1 module but in the 2nd slot in case it is a faulty ram slot and if still no good replacing a module with a new one and then check if it started OK. Search online for DDR3-1600 • CL=11 • NON-ECC • SODIMM • 204-pin • 1.35V • 2Rx8 • PC3-12800 to find suppliers that suit you best.

The laptop supports up to a maximum of 16GB of ram i.e. 2 x 8GB

If still no good, it may be a case of having to use the schematics to check if all the power rails are OK and that the power startup sequence is hardware related and not a firmware problem e.g. BIOS IC problem.

Yes, tried the CMOS reset, sadly it didn’t solve it :(. Will try with the schematics, thanks for help :)

I was updating my answer as I noticed you posted a video in your question.

Please reread my updated answer re the ram modules

@jayeff okay so i read your answer and tried this: i had 1 8gb ddr3 ram stick inside the system, and i disassembled another dell laptop with 8gb ddr3 ram stick and tried taking out the old stick and putting in the new into the same slot, turned on and the issue kept repeating. then i put the new ram into the second slot - still nothing. Lastly tried with both, and still. The lights flash in the same order…

@jayeff so you think i should buy a new one? there are no other possible fixes?

I am thinking it might be a bad CPU. I had a similar problem with an old Dell. I can't remember the detail symptoms. But if the CPU is overloading the PSU, it will try to start and shut down. The fans not operating would be another clue that the power is being shorted. If you pull the CPU and it stays on and the fan runs - though obviously nothing will happen - then that is the answer.

Troubleshooting anything else on the MB is not for the faint of heart.

sadly you cant take out the cpu :(

Yes, the cpu can be removed. BUT b4 you do that, the blinking of that light is trying to tell you something.

Check this out >> https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-...

It looks like 5 blinks, or it might be 4 or 6 blinks. but since it is B&W I can't tell which one -

If it is 5, it is either 2,3 or 3,2 which would be No memory or RAM detected or PCI, video card/chip failure.

The blinking light you have is a 4,1 error code. (4 amber, 1 white). This means that the computers battery is dead, and something is stopping it from charging. Can you confirm that the power cord you are using works? If so, the laptop's battery likely needs to be replaced.

I got this info from here
