Replacement Battery not recognised/charging

Hey there!

I recently bought a second-hand MacBook Pro A1286 (Early 2011), and so far… EVERYTHING has gone wrong. From installing macOS, to getting windows booted (required for school), and now I bought a replacement battery, and the first issue I was having was it not being recognised by the computer, after a SMC reset, NVRAM reset, and some other key combinations, the computer still wouldn’t use the battery power.

Here’s the link to the tutorial I followed and the specific steps I took: Battery not detected, won't charge; strange connector on logic board?

Reference: @Xnriqux (Posted on the 1st OCT 2012)

  • “Disconnect removable devices from the macbook such as USB drives, firewire drives etc.
  • Remove any discs from the superdrive.
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.
  • Connect the charger while still holding the power button, keep holding the power button for 10 seconds. (Note: This must be done WITHOUT THE BATTERY)
  • Turn the macbook on and immediately press and hold command+option+P+R keys. Release the keys when you hear the apple chime sound 3 or 4 times. (must be done before you see the white screen at start up)
  • Shut off the macbook when you get to the login screen or the desktop.
  • While the macbook is OFF press and hold Command+Option+Left Shift+ Power Button for 5 seconds. The sleep LED will go crazy and you might hear a loud tone coming from the speakers. Press the power button one more time to restart the macbook.
  • Again shut off the computer and remove the charger.
  • Install the battery and try to turn on the macbook.
  • Check to see if the battery will charge now and if the macbook will recognize the battery.”

Now that my battery is recognised, my other issue is that macOS won’t charge it, gather any battery information, or use it when disconnected from a power source. I’ve had it functioning in recovery (without being connected to charger), and successfully booted into Windows using battery power however neither operating system’s will give a read-out of charge. I’m currently at a loss. I’ve done everything (to my knowledge), possible. I’m currently re-installing macOS High Sierra on a brand new erased SSD which again is giving me a headache. (I read that erasing and re-installing macOS may work, its trial and error at this point). I’m a frequent Windows user and I know how to troubleshoot almost every issue, however, I’m new to troubleshooting on macOS and don’t know where to go from here. When I unplug the charger things such as the hard drive and screen will stay on but macOS shuts down and I’m left with a black screen. any help will be appreciated.

In Summary: Battery is recognised by macOS. Battery isn’t charging nor won’t the laptop use battery power. When in macOS, the battery icon is charging however says “Battery not charging“. Any further steps I can take to get this working? I noticed that the battery gauge on the side of the laptop is broken, could this be an issue? The same issues occur when its plugged in or out.

@danj here are the added pictures requested. The first update is before I perform a NVRAM and SMC reset. The second update is after I did a NVRAM and SMC reset and followed @Xnriqux tutorial (which is linked in this post).

The laptop won’t recognise the battery at all. Something odd I noticed was if I plug the laptop in and immediately disconnect the charger, the laptop will successfully boot into windows 10, as macOS loads about halfway, and then the laptop turns off. When in windows, it shows that there is still no battery but when in settings the percentage says 100%. Not sure what’s going on here. Would re-installing macOS completely fix this issue? is it as simple as a driver issue? I’m at a loss and currently, I don’t have the tools or time necessary to fix the battery checker.

Another note I’d like to add is when performing an SMC reset, I’ve tried a method where I plug the charger in while resetting SMC and then plug the battery in. This allows me to now turn on/off the computer and use it successfully in both macOS and Windows 10, however, the battery won’t charge, won’t be recognised, and I have no way of telling what percentage the battery is on.

@scenoxed - Well your battery has died! So you will need a new battery MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Early 2011-Mid 2012) Battery

I purchased a replacement battery last week and arrived on Monday, It's currently installed in the MacBook and it holds a charge but my issues occur within the system itself.

@scenoxed - Lets get a fresh CoconutBattery snapshot, also where did you get the battery?

I purchased the battery off eBay (It's one of those cheap Chinese ones.... so we can assume that may be why it's not working), I'm pretty confident it's not an issue with the battery because it has worked before but now it's not.
