@weenico this appears to be a backlight issue. There should be 7 backlight CCFL tubes for your LCD screen so the top one may have gone bad or it is the inverter that is failing. Most likely it will be the CCFL. You will have to take your iMac apart and take the display assembly apart. The CCFL should be accessible from the side of the display. CCFL’s are becoming hard to find so you may have to scour around to find it. Some companies offer CCFL-LED conversion kits  etc.

The first thing I would do on one of these is try the inverter and try my luck - you may get lucky, but as @oldturkey03 said many of these are at a point where the CCFL tubes are worn out and burned out due to high resistance after having thousands of hours put on them. The issue with these displays today is many of them are 10+ years old, and they’re beginning to show their age by having early failure warnings or burning out entirely, so I would do so with the full understanding it may be due to the screen.

If it’s due to a bad screen, I would try the LED conversion - finding good compatible CCFL tubes is nearly impossible today, and you need to do all of them as a set since they need to have similar resistance or it will accelerate the wear on the rest of them.
