The Xbox One Model 1698 Wireless Controller was released by Microsoft in 2015 alongside the Model 1697 controller. This controller is similar to the Model 1697 with internal modifications. It has more features than a basic controller, such as, removable thumbsticks and metal D-Pad buttons. The controller is primarily designed for console use, but is PC compatible.

Analog stick module replacement

Hey,

I tried to change the analog stick module of several of my xbox one controllers, i dont have much experience soldering etc btw.

But i replaced the module on the board and when i connect my controller to my pc with game controller tester the analog stick is pressed 100% to the right.. Why does this happen and how do i prevent it?

I tried to change the module on 3/4 boards and all have similair problems..

Did i burn all my boards? Are the analogstick modules faulty? Or am i missing a step…

I also tried to change it on my elite controller, i replaced the left stick because the right one was working fine.

But after replcing te left one it says im pressing it 100% to the left, moving the stick around etc does nothing.. but the strange thing is it also says that im pushing the right stick 100% in a direction but i dident touch the right one.

Anyone knows what im doing wrong?

And strange that all boards have similair problem…

Ah, yes. The good old 169X and it’s analog stick issues. You can do it without a new PCB, but you need to buy the sticks on a site like eBay. It’s a bit of a PITA, but it’s doable if you’re good with a soldering iron - but it’s also easy to screw up if you aren’t that good so take your time and use a good flux. Refer to this guide to change them. It’s also a bad idea to do one - do both. Usually when one fails, the other fails next.

The alternative is to buy a used PCB with known good sticks, but the problem with those is you’ll probably need to rework it again in short order anyway - you’re truly better off reworking your existing board even if you need to practice on a donor with other issues. You need to get the old solder off as well as you can or that can cause issues.

If you continue having issues with new sticks, the PCB shorted out internally or one of the supporting parts failed. I’ve seen both happen with the 1537 and 1697, since the 1697 was really just a 1537 with a headphone jack. RUN if this is the case - it’s a rabbithole.

So you think the sticks are likely the problem?

I ordered mine on ali or something similair but ill order some new ones on ebay and try that then.

My experience with these and the 1537 usually points to bad sticks. It's not as common as the 1708. HOWEVER, if you tried it once and cleaned it well the PCB is bad.

If this was a standard controller my recommendation would have been to retire this but the Elite controllers are a bit too expensive.
