Why does toilet bowl keep losing water

Why would both of my toilet bowls keep losing water? They flush fine, empty out and fills back up fine but after a bit of time I'll go back in and the water in the bowls have gotten really low. I've checked for leaks nothing there & the wax rings are fine I'm just losing water out of the toilet bowls and I don't know how or where it's going. I always hear the bathtub drains clicking everytime I flush & my neighbors downstairs flush. I live in a condo on the second level, no condo above me but my neighbors below me are now saying that they have water leaking into their place that they think is coming from my condo above them. Could that be because of my toilets and is it possible for it to leak down to their apartment?

@stac69 of course, this may be a difficult question to answer since we do not know the make and model of your toilet ;-) Remember that the water stays at a given level because of the u-bend, which is called a trap, within the porcelain of your toilet. The shape of the bend will determine the height of the water level. So, it is possible that that there is a crack in the trap of the toilet its self and the water is slowly running down the drain (lucky you ). The other, and actually more common issue can be a clogged or improperly installed vent. One way you can check for a plugged vent by flushing the toilet, When the toilet then fills and the tank shuts off the water to the toilet, turn on the hot and cold water on the closest fixture to the toilet, most likely your sink or the tub. If the water level moves in the toilet you have a clogged vent. The change in the level will happen within minutes. Check the vent where it sticks up through the roof and look for obstructions. You can use a snake to snake out the vent stack or flush it with a garden hose (could be messy). The other problem can be a partially clogged downstream drain line. That could siphon the water out of the toilet. give your system a good cleaning with a snake and see what happens. Hope this helps, good luck.

I have a toilet in a bathroom that isn't being used that often. It has anther toilet on the other side of the wall that we use all of the time but the water doesn't go down in that toilet. They should be using the same vent pipe? When I turned on the water in the sink in the bathroom that we don't use the water does go down. There is also a tub in that bathroom. We live in a condo on the second floor. There are 4 floors in this building and 32 units. How can we fix this problem?? It does what you said it would when you turn on the sink water so it probably isn't the toilet that is bad right?

@jmbtoby6866 since it is a condo and has those adjoining toilets, my money is on a venting issue. There really isn't a lot that you can do. Maybe consider using the other toilet more often and see if that helps.

I'm going with @oldturkey03 on this one; my son just bought his first house and had drainage and suction issues. Traced it down to the vent line that allows air into the sewage system so when you flush or drain a sink or tub it has a supply of air instead of trying to draw from the water-filled traps in the rest of the system. The previous owner had a metal roof installed and for some reason cut off the vent and installed some sort of interior one-way valve that didn't work worth a crap. Simply loosening the clamp around the valve abated most of the problem and doesn't seem to be letting sewer fumes into the room.
