How to fix power button after a fall?

I had dropped it hard on the floor and the power button area got smashed a little. It holds the power button on and consumes the entire battery.

How do I fix it?

Pictures on this would help. It looks to me like the same type of end as on the aluminum keyboard. That being the case you may be able to the cap off and using a lot of pressure with a medium sized screwdriver, use the round barrel of the screwdriver burnish the opening where the cap goes back into round. Kind of like cutting an apple using one hand and stroking it out slowly. Here's the teardown on the keyboard to give you an idea of what the opening is like: Apple Wireless Keyboard (A1255) Teardown

Did you get it fixed?

完成的

I tried the suggestion and was gladly surprised that it worked with my wireless trackpad. However, the power button fell, perhaps because of the burnishing, and now I don't find it. Would anybody know if this part (power button) can be found for purchase? Thanks.

I tried the suggestion by knife, but doesn't work. I guess the damage is too deep.

I use sand paper to file out the button's surrounding, then it comes back.

I was doubtful but sand paper worked for me also.

I used the sandpaper method on my trackpad and it was the only thing that fixed the problem.

brilliant. created an account just to thank you. Trackpad had been inoperable for 2 years! now I just gotta figure out how to fix the stuck battery screw case

Hello Yacob,

pls provide more details (or pictures) and someone might have suggestions for you.

Hey Dom,

I read it was probably corroded batteries. Used pliers with the coin, and that easily got the cap to screw open. Lo and behold, I found corroded batteries.

After using sandpaper* to fix the power button, and pliers to open the thing up, the trackpad is back to full operation, and after 2 years too!

edit:*actually used a knife to scrape off the edge that had bent in and depressed the power button.

This also helps, but takes time.

Mine was dented really bad on two spots so I had to use a metal file to trim the edges until I could see the edge of the button. That wasn't enough (ie the button did not get released), so I used a fine pick to peel of the button face (thin metal plate) which revealed the inner plastic part. I kept filing + used the pick to get the shape back into a circle and the button finally popped out. I used sandpaper to smooth the edges.

Try pressing it gently with a plier 75 degrees from where it absorbed the smash. It will pop back. Your eye doesn't see it but the resulting shape after the hit is a slight oval. You want to make it circular again. (this only will work with one smash per circle halve)

Can you not pop the button out and reshape the housing from the inside?

Would like to try it before I get the needle files out.
