Vdh002 error with AND without SSD

Hi, was wondering if anybody knows apple diagnostic codes well enough to know whether VDH002 necessarily signifies a problem with the SSD, or could it be a logic board issue?

My macbook pro retina late 2013 suddenly hung, and subsequently has refused to boot with a flashing question mark. Running diagnostics through D reveals the VDH002 error code. I have not yet had the opportunity to reseat the ssd in a different mac or migration case to try and see if it works elsewhere. However, removing it from the logic board and running diagnostics again (without the ssd) still gives VDH002. Could this be a logic board controller issue? Or is that just generic for no drive detected, and I can safely order a new ssd drive?

Thanks for any advice.

Edit: the ssd unit feels very hot to the touch after turning on/shutting down the machine. 60c or so. No corrosion or other damage/shorting visible, for what little is exposed.

This Q & A should help solve your issue:

Random freezes & VDH002 "There may be an issue with a storage device"

UPDATE

I.m pretty sure your SSD is kaput. If you can back it up with an external USB Time Machine backup.

If you need to upgrade it, now’s the time.

This link will take you to the available 4 parts made for your machine:

So Carlo Strino's answer at the end of that Q&A would imply that sometimes VDH002 is related to at least firmware and possibly hardware logic board issues. And no way to tell them apart other than experimenting.

It is very unusual for this board to get hot. Is this the original SSD? Has the machine been worked on and do you have the full history on the machine?

Hi, thanks for your response. Original machine, purchased from apple at release, opened for the first time to diagnose this problem.

Yes, I was wondering about the heat, I would have thought the SSD would generally be a low power component. So another bit of evidence for the SSD being knackered? Although it's very strange to me (with no specific knowledge of macbook architecture, just basic intuition) that a broken component would be drawing a high load.

SOLVED: Do not try install with Option+R or something like that. You need to install with a pen drive boot with Catalina and the SSD recognized. Works for me.

One additional thought: I bought a Macbook not recognizing its ssd. I replaced the cable from the logic board to the ssd and it recognized the ssd and worked fine after that. Apparently in some models failing ssd cables are a known weakness.

Good luck!

This is likely a bad SSD, if you’re able to test it in another device that’d be your best bet. Not certain but looks like some others have experienced this error with a new SSD until they reset the SMC, so it may be normal to receive the error when it’s removed and it’s not recognizing the SSD? https://www.dubrawsky.org/blog/2017/12/1...

Most SSDs have suggested operating temps of 0-60C but that’s pretty hot for right after booting. I would expect ~60C would be under load.

Thanks for your response. I guess the high temp would indicate a broken ssd. Strange that it would go out like that all of a sudden. Have ordered the OWC replacement drive and we'll see what happens (I will update this post for posterity/community knowledge)

I had the same issue, tested ssd in another device and it worked. Tried another ssd in faulty MacBook and it was the same issue. Does this mean I need a new logic board?

Hi, I have the same problem. I have ejected the SSD, but at diagnostic I have the VDH002 error.

How did you manage to solve the problem? The logic board was faulty?

Thank you

Hi, I have the same problem. The VDH002 error persists even after removing the SSD. I am afraid the motherboard and/or bus are broken.

Is this fixable?

@Lucas @s1lviu Hi, this is what I can tell you (after experimenting, visiting genius bar, etc.): VDH002 just indicates the state of the firmware not being able to talk to the SSD. This could be a bus/controller error or an SSD error - in my case it was both. Replacing with the aftermarket SSD didn't help. Some people managed to fix this by reflashing the firmware via some developer/engineering interface. I am not nearly that technical or well resourced, and in my particular country it is cheaper to replace than to repair. So I sold my machine via eBay for parts. The person who purchased it was able to get it to work! I do not know the details, so this comes with a major disclaimer that I don't know for certain - but since they were repairing stuff and reselling it, I imagine they weren't just network booting (which worked fine) but intending it for resale. Which means they either got the board to talk to the ssd somehow, or were booting via external USB/firewire.

are you able to provide info on the party you sold it too? i just purchased a macbook off ebay and im getting this issue. apple quoted me $540 to fix it which is insane. hoping to find a solution.
