white and blue smoke

ok so my mower isnt what i had to pick from on choices, it's just a simple little 21" MTD push mower. i recently changed the oil and changed the blade on it. never once had an issue with the mower like im having now. ive got oil basically pouring out of the airfilter, i've got to prime it every single time, for instance, i turn the mower off ( release the gas bar) to light a cig, and ive gotta prime it 4-5 times to get it to start again. mower wasnt even turned off for more than 30s. not to mention when i turn the mower off, its still running while pushing out a lot of whitish blue smoke. sometimes its more white, somethings its blue. this issue has never happened prior to changing the oil. not for certain what to do or to even make of this. *side note* prior to changing the oil today, the oil had not been changed on the mower for nearly 3 yrs. i'm not the original owner

Did you turn the machine on its side?

Try draining some oil. If it still smokes, try a higher viscosity.

Hi guys can I throw out some thoughts here . @rustyc you mentioned replacing the blade . When you did this did you put the mower on it side or upside down ,If so the oil in the filter is come back through the carb . Replace the filter clean the carb and replace the spark plug . You may also want to replace the fuel in the tank as there have been cases where the oil has made its way back into the tank and now your running fuel with oil . @ mayer has a very good answer here and does have a point about the blueish white smoke not being fine. @darkethereal the only case this is fine is if the engine is a two stroke running a fuel oil mix . So in a way you could be right but in the case of a four stroke, which this one is if it has a crankcase full of oil, its not a good thing . You also may have put the wrong grade of oil in the engine . Rusty when you replace the blade did you have to use a hammer or beat on the blade at all . any kind of side pressure can cause a flexing of the shaft and break seals in the crank causing oil leaks . Richard covered pretty much everything else in his answer. One last thing about the run on , a fresh spark plug will probably fix this as the plug is probably fouled and causing the engine to diesel on shut down . So in recap Change out the air filter or clean it if its washable . Make sure you get all the oil out , next clean the carb , and finally replace the spark plug . If after doing all this you have no joy then you will likely need to look at a head gasket repair . wouldnt hurt to do a compression test. Hope this helps

very helpful, and yes it was upside down for the blade change and on its side for the oil change. i'll change what u have suggested, but i do have a question, what would cause it to still run for 15-20s after i've released the throttle?

Blue or white smoke coming from your engine usually indicates burning oil, which can be caused by:

Overfilling the crankcase with oil

Incorrect oil grades

Operating engine at greater than a 15 degree angle

Inoperative crankcase breather

Crankcase air leak

Blown head gasket

Worn cylinder and/or rings

Turning/tilting the engine on its side for storage, oil change or any other reason.

Note: If the engine has to be tilted, ensure the spark plug is facing upwards to help prevent oil from escaping the crankcase.

Other reasons for blue or white smoke from engines include exceeding the engine’s oil capacity shown on dipstick, an obstruction in the breather tube (located behind the air filter), damages to the cylinder/piston rings, and more.

Engine oil capacity is dependent on your specific engine model and can be determined by checking the Oil Recommendation FAQ. You can also learn how to check the oil level and change intervals to ensure the engine is running at the correct oil capacity.

How to Troubleshoot Engine Smoking

If you wish to troubleshoot and repair the small engine yourself,

Step 1: Are you tilting the engine or using it at more than a 15 degree angle? Tilting your mower or equipment can cause leaks. Right the machine before moving forward.

Step 2: Checking and changing the oil is an easy troubleshooting technique for this problem. Check to see if the oil is overflowing or you’re using the wrong grade/type.

Step 3: Check the crankcase for leaks.

Step 4: Is the head gasket blown?

Step 5: Are the rings and/or cylinder worn?

White/Bluish smoke is fine, weird about the priming so much. Check your fuel line if their is one but your mower seems to be alright.

what about it still running while the gas bar isnt being pressed? it'll run for nearly 20s before it stops

also there's a weird like "clunking" sound coming from the engine when it stays running for those few secs, but that also only happens when the smoke appears.

Yeah, so it won't run that long with the throttle so low, their isn't an Idle for push lawnmowers due to being no gears, Theirs Just a throttle, The further it gets pushed down, the more gas it uses which then increases the speed of the blade.

The clunky noise is just the Pistons and motor firing up, nothing to worry about.
