SSD in a PowerMac G5?
I have a PowerMac G5 and I want to install a SSD 128GB. I do have two Hard Discs (160GB and 500GB).
Is it possible to install it? What type of SSD should I find? Are there different types in the market?

Hey,
I have also two HDD inside(160GB+300GB). But SSD is more comfortable so I choose an Intel 320 SSD(160GB).
First, I remove 300GB HDD from under bay, and set new SSD.
Then I use "Carbon Copy Cloner" to clone 160GB HDD.
And remove 160GB HDD, then 300GB HDD install on upper bay.
Now I use 160GB SSD for Mac OS, and 300GB HDD for my documents.
Buy a Hard disc case and 160GB HDD now use atached HDD.
It is a very simple and cheap way to use SSD.
As you know, G5 has a SATA-1 interface. Intel 320 SSD has a SATA-2 interface but it works completely.

Since my original answer I to have installed a SSD in a G5. As Tsutomu states I found it to be a very easy process and I also used CCC to clone the drive. Worked like a charm. +

I used Intel-320 SSD for my G5.
First, G5 told "This device can not recognize on this computer".
I ignored this message.
And use disc utility and format to Apple HFS+ format. Not GUID format.

It's probably formatted GUID which the Intel will recognize but the G5 won't. The G5 Power PC processor will see the Apple Partition Map type of format.

Added PNY XLR8 120GB SSD in second drive bay of my Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2.3GHz. Works perfectly and can boot from it. Boot time is marginally faster (7 seconds faster) than the original 7200 RPM HD, but apps and files load incredibly faster than the stock HD. With 3.5 adapter came to $65. Breathed new life into an old workhorse.

Had the same problem with OCZ vertex+ (Sata-2)
Managed to install the operating system, but after booting had the Kernel Panic.
this corrupted the disk.

Can you please let me know which SSD you used, as I wanted to do the same and the G5 does not recognize it after several tries - but my mac book pro 2006 recognizes it easily and also installation no problem! it is a SanDisk Extreme SSD with 120 GB

Beware: I tested a pair of Crucial "M4" SSDs (128GB & 256GB) and merely inserting one into my PowerMac G5 tower results in a kernel panic on boot.
I tried with the drive unformatted, and with it pre-formatted (Apple Partition Map, for PowerPC compatibility) and the kernel panic happens both ways.
I'm not sure why these drives don't get along with the G5; maybe because they are 6Gb/s?

So far I would say it's not possible, I've tried using a Kingston 240GB SV30037A SSD and 240GB Crucial CT250BX100SSD1 SSD on a Power Mac G5 A1177 G5 Dual Core 2GHz and so far it's not seeing either drive.
I tried cloning Leopard 10.5.6 from a Toshiba ( Apple ) 250GB MK2555GSFX to the 240GB Crucial and the G5 didn't see the drive - Now cloning to the Kingston 240GB to see it if works.
I tried this a few months ago with a G4 iMac ( can't remember the exact model ) using a Crucial SSD and some how was able to make it work - It may be because I'm doing this on a Intel MacBook ? I partitioned both drives using Apple Partition Map so in a while I'll try the Kingston to see if it boots.

After more than six hours of trying ( Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper) still won't boot from either SSD -
with powermac 2004 I needed to jumber 5 and 6 on my 1tb mechanical new drive.
