Ruined the connector #3 and cannot hear my correspondents

Hi there

Changing the battery I ordered from iFixit, I ruined the connector #3 while attempting to remount my iPhone 3GS.

All work fine although, but I cannot hear my correspondents - they hear me but I don't !

I reckon the connector #3 links the earpiece ? In fact everything works fine with a pair of headphones, both way.

What is ruined is the white piece of plastic over the connector #3 that broke when I tried to open it; now I cannot link the flat cable to the connector ! Is there a way to do that ?

Thanks for your answer

there are many sites offering to repair this connector 3 fairly cheaply, you can find them with google or on ebay shops

jeanmariecalvat, on the bottom of connector 3, there is a small black plastic tab that flips up 90 degrees with very light pressure. This will allow you to slide the flex cable in snugly. Once inserted all the way in (none of the copper contacts should be showing), then push the plastic flap back down snugly onto the pcb. It should work right now, unless you have damaged the connector itself.

Connector #3 is supposed to slide in from the top after you've flipped the tab up. Patience is key because its not as smooth as you'd like things to go! Ive found it helpful to guide the connector through the slot from the top, and then gently but firmly press down on the connector with a pen or a set of tweezers as you slide it through, and then flip the white tab down. If you are like me be prepared to use a good magnifying lamp, a steady hand and lots of patience. Oh yes, I noticed that some of the iPhone have the colors reversed. so if I have a black tab and you have a white tab, that is ok. Just take a good look at the connector.

Of course if you are in the business of some really, really small stuff soldering, I believe that here is the part you are looking for http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSear... and http://www.acos-electronics.com/sdp/5973... instructions are here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.p... I wish you good luck and please let us know how it is going.

Thank you for your answer oldturkey03.

You must admit that iFixit guide doesn't mention connector #3 by it's number (3) and now I have ruined the connector's tab and certainly the connector itself !

I will try hopelessly with a point of glue, although I find it more convenient to use earphones now. (until iPhone 5 comes out !)

I'd go with the earphones as well :) all the best to you..

I have a write up on my blog on these repairs. The #3 connector is a special connector I have grown very fond of. It is easy to replace once you've done a few hundred of them, yet it can cause the most headache if it goes wrong. Like Polly said, google #3 connector repair and I should be on the first page as a repair service. Without the outer "structure" of the connector it is going to be hard to get the ribbon to stay put or connect with the pins.
