My speaker is crackling when audio is played, is it an error with the speaker or is it something wrong with the device providing the input?

A crackling speaker is typically one thing, a blown out subwoofer or "sub". This will usually happen when you're playing sound through the speaker at an unusually loud volume. Subwoofers are what send out the bass through the speaker. When there is too much bass, or the bass is too loud, it can blow out a subwoofer. The only way this could be fixed is to get another subwoofer and repair it yourself.

I have the Sony Xb40 and only certain songs sound good on it. If there is a song with any sort of louder bass or Ben middle of the road bass it sounds horrible like scratchy and blown but I just got it yesterday. It’s not like I’m blasting it either it’s only at half volume or less and for a speaker that’s meant for bass it doesn’t do too well with it... I have the same earbuds as it and it sound great on every song I’m wondering if mine is just a factory default like I got a bad one or something

Sounds like you may have a blown speaker. I have fixed this on another type of speaker by cutting the wires on one of the speakers that is making the cracking sound. It degrades sound quality but gets rid of the crackling. Replacing the blown speaker is another option however finding a replacement speaker that will fit may be difficult.
