first it shows the sad face apple/ipod/support then i plug it in to computer to see what happens then it shows the battery but not that it is charging i pick it up and move it around and then pops up sad face again usually i can hear or feel the hard drive but its silent what do i do now? is it just needing a new battery or is it completely shot?

jennifer, the first thing you want to do is to change your battery. Follow this guide. See what happens. If that does not change anything, most likely it won't:-) your hard drive is defective and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps, good luck.
