err cf / err 99

My canon eos20d comes up with err cf as soon as I turn it on

- taken out lense/ battery/ cf to sit for a bit

- tried restarting with fresh battery

- bought new compact flash, same issue

- tried to format new card, new error stating 'err 99'

any help much appreciated!!!
