Screen is not working

I believe the battery may be charging but the charging icon doesn't show on the screen and the screen will not turn on. So what would be the cause and what can be done to fix it?

Not enough to tell you much here. Let's assume the display has failed, then using FaceID and voice you should be able to get a response.

If that fails then you need look deeper, what happened to the phone? Did you drop it, bang it of sit on it? Did you get it wet?

How are you charging the phone? USB-C or via MagSafe? Are you using a good cable as well as charger?
