xmas light buld testing
Can the meter be used to test for a bad xmas light in a string of lights?
Yes, you can use an iFixit multimeter to find a bad bulb in a string of Christmas lights.
The two main ways are continuity or resistance:
Continuity:
- Set the multimeter to continuity (the diode/beep symbol)
- Unplug the string from the wall
- Remove a bulb and touch the probes to the two wires inside the socket
- A beep = that section of the circuit is good
- No beep = the bad bulb is somewhere in that section
- Work your way down the string, halving the section each time to narrow it down
Resistance:
- Set to ohms (Ω)
- Same process — test across each bulb's socket
- A good bulb shows low resistance
- A bad bulb shows OL (open line / infinite resistance)
