这台13寸的MacBook Pro使用四核英特尔十代i5/i7处理器和锐炬Plus核芯显卡,于2020年5月发布(型号为A2251/EMC3348,拥有4个雷雳3接口)

Is it possible to replace the Touch ID sensor?

So I was taking apart my 2020 MacBook Pro to replace the thermal paste and clean the insides when I accidentally ripped the flex cable for the Power Button/Touch ID sensor.

I've been researching this for the last five days, and it seems these sensors are paired to the motherboard and cannot simply be swapped out. Since I live in Brazil, the official repair cost is absurdly high, around $800 USD. Apple Support here won't repair just the sensor, they only offer a full motherboard replacement to get a new paired sensor. Not even including a full top case replacement… just the motherboard and the sensor. Period.

That being said, is there any known way to restore Touch ID on my MacBook without replacing the entire board? I’m going to Florida next month and wanted to know about prices and if such repair is even possible.

You can always find an expert micro soldering technician to reconnect the broken Touch ID flex cable.

Apple does not provide self-service repair for this model, no manual, no parts.

Yes, I was looking for a technical assistance that would do this kind of service. I found one and they said they would do this service for R$ 500 (~$92 USD). I waited for 5 days and yesterday they sent me a message saying that they couldn't repair the machine. Apparently Apple uses flex cables that are impossible to perform this type of micro soldering

UPDATE: 2020 Intel version has no parts on the apple self service store.
I would check out and try appel's self service repair. I believe you can buy and pair their original home button to your logic board. - I don't think it is available in Brazil though
Outside of that, unfortunately there is nothing in the market yet.

You can just use a any compatible replacement button, and it will work as the power button, but no fingerprint functionality.

Oh okay, but if I take it to the Apple Store, would they fix and replace JUST the sensor? Because the motherboard is fully functional…

Sorry, the TouchID button is married to your logic board. If you enabled TouchID your data is now locked away and with a broken Button means your board is now locked out.

There are some non-ID buttons you can buy to replace yours but you can't use TouchID and can't protect your data.

@mbt1800 no, the apple store will not just replace the touch ID button - You went into an apple store ad asked them already.

I was referring to appel's self service repair. https://selfservicerepair.com/en-US/home

I think if you are in latam, like Brazil, you will need to use a VPN and find some sort of shipping address to use in the USA.

Sorry, this answer is useless for your model... The Intel version of the 2020 does not have parts for sale by apple it seems. The M1 version does. Sorry if i got your hope up. Ill update my answer to reflect this.

Replacement isn’t possible without Apple’s tools. Cheapest option: Apple Store in the US for sensor + board swap.

Or just buy a good old 2015 MBP and can fix just about everything :)

@rashmikandhil - Sorry Apple won't replace the Button only the logic board with its mated button.

@danj So does this mean that there is no way to change only the sensor? My logic board works fine though…

@mbt1800 - The Button and Logic board are married at the point of assembly of the system and can't be divorced ☹️

If the systems TouchID was not set and the drive was not encrypted (both are as default) then you could get a power only Button. These special buttons are put into virgin systems within Schools and businesses which don't want the TouchID to get in the way of managing their gear.

Clearly, that not the case here as once the TouchID is used the system is then bound to it and this exact Button!

Think it this way... you have a vault that requires access by the one key, if you loose it you can't get the data held within and while forcing the lock may look possible the data is no longer accessible.

Now the only option is either finding someone who has brain surgeons skills to patch the ribbon cable or replace the logic board with its mated TouchID button.
