Restarts when plugged into wall, not when in USB

I've read the open questions and am wondering if there are any lot numbers on the defective batteries.

My son's phone got wet and I was able to revive it by replacing the dock connector and battery. He went away a couple of days and the phone didn't work and he didn't have an explanation except it wouldn't charge.

I thought it might have gotten wet again and replaced the battery and dock connector again. It will power up and reads "activation required" when I unlock it so long as it's plugged into the outlet. If it's plugged into a USB port, it gets part way through a reboot and starts over. The PC never recognizes it because it doesn't come all the way up.

I'd really love to get some advice! Thanks!

sally, this error usually occurs with a bad battery and or a bad dock connector. Since you already replaced those twice, it stands to reason there may be other issues. Number one, of course, make sure the battery is the right one. I do know that there have been lots that did not function properly. Also, double check the dock connector. The only other thing would be to check on the two fuses on your logic board and see if those are still working. you need to check the with a multimeter for continuity. Let us know what you find so that we can try to assist you as much as possible.

I was about braindead the other night. I have a second 3GS. I did test the circuits and they had continuity--thanks for that tip, always like to learn something new! It looks like I have two bad batteries. My son's board works fine in my phone. My board works well with my battery and his dock connector, but his board with my dock connector and his battery won't boot at all. Tricked me because this battery had a good charge on it when it arrived. Thanks for the help!

Called ifixit Friday and got a new battery Saturday morning. Awesome service. I've installed it and the phone is working as expected. Thanks for the help!
