Clicking PSU and faulty capacitors on logicboard.

Hey guys.

I have a iMac 20" a1207 (can't seem to find the S/N??)

When I plug in the power cord the PSU starts clicking randomly.

See it for yourself, I shot a video of the clicking:

http://www.raschanga.dk/imac.mov

So my question is which of the components on the PSU is faulty?

Is it possible to fix the PSU myself with a little soldering?

Is it dangerous?

Where can I buy a new component? is it possible?

OR! Should I buy a new/refurbished PSU?

Wheres the cheapest online supplier that ships to Denmark?

ALSO!

All the capacitors on the logicboard is "exploded", the "acid" has leaked..

Is it possible til replace them?

Will they be to small to resolder with a normal soldering iron?

I hope you experts have a minute or two to help me out.

Have you tried opening it with VLC?

My buddy and I can open it and view it with no problems.

Please let me know if VLC doesn't work either.

Your seial number is on the bottom of the stand. You have a well documented issue of bad capacitors and it takes a major soldering job to fix it. The authority on this is Jim Warholic and he has all the info you need plus parts on his web site: here for the logicboard:http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-re...

and here for the power supply: http://jimwarholic.com/2008/11/apple-ima...

someone else who replaces caps and who I asked for help is Markus Weiher, he isn't on here so often any more but you may like to send an email (check in the users- his avatar is a skull). I used a hot air solder station and it cut through the stubborn solder better than irons/drilling.

Mayer, thank you, very neat and useful answer, I will get back to the links provided when my hangovers vanishes.

Dan: as I wrote it is the capacitors on the logicboard that's leaking.

The PSU is clicking. two different problems on the same Mac :(

You state you have blown capacitors on the PSU, and they are leaking. It was difficult to see any damage (got dizzy trying) in the vid but I could hear the clicking (try using a tripod next time & using manual focus).

At that point I would recommend just replacing the PSU Vs fixing it.

It's not a job for a beginner. You may want to bring the system in to someone who's had more experience. Iit can be dangerous or cause a fire if your not careful.
