Turns off at start up
The TV was left on in the basement for a couple days when we went out of town. I assume is went into a kind of stand by mode. Now when you power up the green light comes on for about 5 seconds and there is a pop sound and it turns it self off. The screen will only flash light for just a split second when it first powers on.

If you haven't already done so, try a power refresh and see if that resolves the problem
Disconnect the power from the TV and then press and hold the TV's Power button (not the remote control's power button) operated for a full 30 seconds and then release it.
Reconnect the power to the TV and check what happens.
Was there a power failure at the premises while you were away that you're aware of?
Also please confirm the model number of the TV.

The model is KDL-42ex440. There is no real power button. When you first plug it in the light on the from is green before is pops and shuts down. I have found that if I push the power button on the remote a couple times right after plugging it in the light on the front will switch from green to red. After this nothing happens. I played with it a little and pushing the power button the remote got it to switch from red to green but after it just shut down.

Kept playing and right after I plugged it in when the light turned green I pressed and the up arrow. I did the same with the home button. Both times the green light started flashing and after about 5 seconds it popped and shut off.

Looking at p.15 of the user manual there is a Power button (see #5) on the TV.
Your TV model number is listed at the bottom of p.1

It is not like a real power button. It is more like a sensor.
