Placed my iPod on a magnet - is it cooked?

I was fiddling around with my iPod and I was going to connect it to iTunes on my Surface Pro, which has a magnetic closure thing for the keyboard/screen sleep function. I set the iPod down on the magnet of the keyboard and immediately it shut off and has been making clicking sounds and showing a red X on the screen instead of booting. I know the battery is fine as it holds a charge and it boots into diagnostic mode. Upon research, it seems like a hard drive issue. I'd like to know if there's any way for me to potentially fix this without opening it, as with my luck, this is apparently the hardest iPod of this type to open.

@fabledfemboy sure looks and sounds like a HDD issue. "I'd like to know if there's any way for me to potentially fix this without opening it" no, you can't. No matter what your plan is, you will have to open it up. Yes, it is an absolute "bear" to open it but really not impossible. Get a 1" putty knife from your closest hardware store and it can be done. The worst part that can happen is that you bend the clips on the backplate. Luckily the back covers are still sold for not a lot of money at many online stores. Follow this guide iPod Classic 硬盘更换 and you'll be okay.

The only pitfall is step 18. Do not use any pry tool etc to lift the lock on the battery connector. Those connectors are the achilles heel of the iPod. Those pop off the board easily and will require some board soldering. Use a paperclip and bend it in an L-shape. Then insert the smaller leg under the lock and gently pull it up. That will release the cable.

It is really not a terribly complicated job, just pretty frustrating :-)

Yeah, I kind of thought it would come down to an HDD replacement. Thanks for the tip on step 18 though, I would've never figured that out myself until it was broken lol.

I’m surprised the case magnet would be that strong, but if it was, you maybe able to recover it via re-installing your files 如何进入DFU模式并还原iPod

The other option is replacing the micro drive with a flash SSD setup. I did both of mine years ago with bigger drives and it’s quite fast! How To Revive Your Old IPod Classic With An SSD

Unfortunately this didn't work, I think the hard drive is too damaged to be repaired as it just wouldn't go into DFU mode and continued to show the red X. Thanks for the suggestions though, I will probably replace the HDD with an iFlash.
