Do I have a bad panel or maybe something else?

UN75NU6900FXZA

Hi. I just acquired this TV and I am trying to repair it. It only comes on intermittently, and when it does, I see vertical bars just to the right of center. I replaced the main board but there was no change. Does this look like a bad panel?

@bradmorris49199 that looks like your panel has lost contact with the driver boards. The driver boards are the long skinny boards that are connected with the LCD panel via some very fine ribbon cables. Those are not replaceable.

What you can try is to open the back of the TV and located those boards. Then find the ribbon cable that connects to the area where the black stripes are. Now push on the ribbon cable to try and establish an electrical connection between the panel and teh ribbon cable. If the picture comes back on, you know it is that connection. Sometimes placing something over that ribbon and then using a piece of good adhesive tape can keep that pressure applied and allows you to use the TV for a bit longer.

If pressure does not work, check the ribbon cables in between the driver boards and check the driver boards for any failed (burned or missing) components. Of course, you also want to check the ribbon cables going to the driver boards and either coming from the T-con board or the mainboard. Not sure if your mainboard has the T-con board integrated.

Just as an FYI, errors like this are never a main board issue.

@oldturkey03 Thanks for the info! I replaced the main board because of the intermittent power issue. Also, I failed to mention in my original question that the standby light does not come on when the unit is plugged in.

@bradmorris49199 that is interesting. The standby light is generated by the power board and just allows the main board to sent the "signal" to the power board to activate the rest of the circuits. No Standby power is usually a failed power board, which in your case would be wrong, since it does come on. I have experienced plenty of "weird " errors over the last couple of months with the large screens from Samsung as well as others. Failed displays lead to all kinds of power board issues.

@bradmorris49199 I do not have a schematic etc. for your TV so no idea how it looks like where the main board connects to your driver boards. There commonly should be to flat ribbon cable connector to those boards. Disconnect the power board, disconnect one of those cables then reconnect the power board. Now turn it on. Any change? Try the same with the other side? If this is confusing, post some pictures of the back of your TV so we can see the boards etc.

@oldturkey03 I tried what you suggested but nothing worked. When I unplug the power board from the main board, the backlight comes on and I hear several clicks which appear to be coming from the power board (I saw in a YouTube video that you can test the power board this way). At this point, I think I’m just going to take it back where I got it for recycling. Thanks again for your advice.

@bradmorris49199 the clicking most likely comes from a relay on the power board. Sorry you can't get it fixed. One of theses days the DIY community will figure out how we can replace the driver boards in order to keep those TV's out of the landfill
