Toilet Has Weak Flush

The toilet in my master bedroom has a very weak flush. This causes it to not complete the "flush cycle" most of the time. What could be the cause of that, and how can I fix it? Thanks!

Hi @melzmark,

Remove the lid from the toilet cistern and check that the water level in the cistern is the correct height indicating that there is sufficient water in the cistern to perform a complete flush.

It could be a faulty cistern float valve closing off the water supply to the cistern too soon.

You didn't specify the make and model of the toilet so here are two links that may help.

This one shows a bottom inlet type cistern valve and how to adjust the water level.

This one shows different types of inlet valves but their principle of operation is basically the same. A float mechanism attached to the valve falls as water is drained from the cistern when the toilet is flushed. This opens the valve for the water to start refilling the cistern. The float rises with the water level as the cistern fills and then it shuts off the water when it reaches the desired height (or amount of water).

If you meant that the water in the toilet pan rises when the toilet is flushed and then slowly drains, rather than draining quickly then there's a blockage in the pipe somewhere between the toilet and the sewer main. It may not rise in the pan but if it slowly drains from the pan whilst flushing there's still a blockage somewhere. You may need to call a plumber.

Thank you, @jayeff,

I'd already focused on the water levels and the valves to no avail. But this is exactly what happens:

Being on a fixed income, we have very meager financial means. Is there any way to fix this without calling a plumber?

@melzmark

If it only drains slowly from the one toilet and from nowhere else, e.g. another toilet or sink etc. it will be in the section of pipe between that toilet and where it connects to the main pipe from the premises leading to the sewer main in the street.

You could try using a hose and pouring water down the toilet hope that the water pressure from the hose dislodges any blockage and moves it further down the pipe and then into the sewer. It may take fair amount of water though.

Other than that you may have to hire an electric eel and feed that down the pipe.

Sometimes toilet/bathrooms have a drain hole in the floor so you could feed the eel down that rather than forcing it through the bend in the toilet and damaging the pan

@melzmark start of with a good plunger.
