MSI stealth 15m a11uek laptop - Dead Motherboard (15631)

Hello everyone 👋

Im looking to repair a motherboard from the above laptop. This is the first time attempting something like this, so any help at all would be very welcome. It's been unused for over 9 months.

I have removed the motherboard and have seen 2 areas of liquid damage, one a lot worse than the other (as seen in pictures). I have ordered some isopropyl alcohol to clean these areas, probably do the whole board to make sure. I've also ordered some thermal paste 👍

Power wise the charger is working as checked with multimeter.

Apart from the above, Is there anything else I can check to get the motherboard working again.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Darren

Update (07/03/23)

I have now fully cleaned and checked over the motherboard. On visual check I cant see anything out the ordinary.

I then tested to see if there was power getting to the motherboard - no power at all. If you look at the picture with the DC jack - connection A gives nothing, connection B starts off around 1V and loses power till it falls to 0. Then on the DC jack itself it looks like there is burn spots present, so I'm thinking a new DC jack?

The laptop has a thunderbolt power connection, could I power it purely from that (without fixing DC jack?) Lazy option 😜

@dazjilly first, clean that whole board properly. You pointed out some of the corrosion but we can not rule out that there is more. Check for any damaged components and some of those may need a resolder with plenty of flux. After that you need to check the power rails and see if your motherboard does get power. Be prepared to possibly "fire it up" so you need to reinstall your heatsinks/fan etc.

You have a very busy board, so in order for us to help you sort things out, we need to zoom in closely. Post some very focused and large images of your board. Otherwise we really can't make out the details. I have not found the schematics for this board but have the component layout. That makes it even tougher to diagnose ;-) but let's see what we can figure out.

@oldturkey03 thank you for your reply and I appreciate your time in helping me 👍[image|3011697]

I will be cleaning the board later today and I will double check for any damaged components (didn't see any first time round).

I have the boards schematics I believe, using software called boardviewer. Having a quick look - if I select certain pins it highlights the board yellow etc. Hopefully that will help (see attached picture)

I will send close up pictures of the board once back in from work 😊

@dazjilly if you are using board viewer then you have the boardview which is not the same as a schematic. It'll help but is only half the battle :-)

@dazjilly absolutely could this be an issue. It could also be short in the power rail. De-solder the port and see what happens. If you have burn marks on there, you know that something is up with it, and it should be replaced.

Good job on getting there :-)
