Which wire goes for what?

Hey! I wanted to fix my headphones using a new TRRS plug, since the old one broke. I cut open the headphone's cables and I see that there are these wires:

  • Red
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Copper
  • Red & copper

Does anyone know which wire could go for which ring?

(it's my first time interacting here, let me know if there's anything missing, thank you!)

@xdestino I assume this is the plug end? The wire color is not standard so it may not give us any results. But you can measure the wire at the end where the insulation is off to the drivers/Speakers/ Mic (if you got one) Place your multimeter in ohm mode, red probe to one end and black probe on the terminal end. If your meter shows continuity, you know where it goes too. Not as complicated as I make it sound :-)

Unfortunately, manufactures are free to use any color wire they want, so it's a crapshoot as to what wire goes to what ring.

However, there are a couple of things we can do to try and figure out what's what. First, knowing the make and model of your headphones would help us in possibly finding either wiring diagrams or previous users' experience with the wiring to the plug.

Personally, what I'd try would be to see if I could figure it out from disassembling the broken connector and determine which wire is connected where.

The only other suggestion I have would be to first figure out what each of the rings and the tip does based on what it's plugged into, then open up the headphones and find out where each of the wires goes. For example, you'll probably have left and right speakers, and presumably a microphone. If you can find out which color wire goes to each of those components inside the headphones, that would go a long way toward puzzling out how to wire a replacement jack.

Although @dadibrokeit is correct, the common setup of wires in headphones I usually see is:

Red: Right positive

Blue: Left positive

Copper: negative

Green: mic

Not always true, but common.

Good information here. Any idea what ohms you would expect from headphone speakers? I'm thinking an ohmmeter reading from red to copper and from blue to copper should both give similar measurements corresponding to a speaker resistance. What, maybe 4 ohms, something like that?

完成的

~ 2 to 4 ohms, depending on the speaker setup.
