How do I Replace the Screen?

The screen below the outer glass is cracked on my Captivate, is there anyway of replacing it?? and if so please help.

I've looked at one of the links posted about taking it apart and it only goes as far as removing the motherboard is there other steps that goes after taking the motherboard out?

Hey Link30,

It sounds like you definitely have a broken display assembly on your hands. A quick online search took me to this site that sells replacement Display Assemblies for your device.

Unfortunately, as you mentioned, we do not yet have a guide that shows how to install a new display assembly. Luckily, the motherboard installation guide that you mentioned will get you pretty darn close! If you look at the last picture in the motherboard guide seen here, it looks as if the only other part you will need to remove is the gray and black plastic plate protecting the display assembly. You can even see the orange board underneath that looks just like the one in the product image on the first site I linked to.

If you feel like getting your feet a little wet in the DIY-repair world, we say go for it! You can even take a picture or two to add to a new guide for showing other people how to install a new display assembly, if you so desire!

Hope this helps! Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Happy fixing!

A YouTube search of "replace captivate screen" resulted in several step-by-step videos showing how to replace the screen.

That said, I can tell you from experience that it's not as easy as it looks. If you decide to do it, the key is PATIENCE - go slow and don't force anything. Good luck!

Be carefull, if you want to remove the screen without breaking it, IT IMPOSSIBLE!! it has too much glue between it and te case. ;)

I may have watched the same video. I actually watched several of them. I watch one about 1/3 of the way through before determining the guy had never done it before himself in that it took the 1/3 of the time trying to get the back cover off after all of the screws were removed.

Anyhow, one of the ones I watched, the guy suggests the use of a hair drier or "Heat Gun" if you have one. This will loosen the adhesive. He does make a point to warn you not to mess up the flex ribbon that operates the "Settings, Home, Back, & Search" soft-touch keys at the bottom of the phone. He states that if the screen is broken, you really don't need to worry about taking it off in one piece anyway. Just make sure you don't mess up the flex at the bottom unless you plan to replace that as well.
