I can't get a 3gs into DFU mode

My phone won't go into dfu mode. if i turn it off it won't power back on till connected to a wall charger or pc and then only if it is down below 20% most times and it shows the battery icon even when unplugged from pc for charging are wall charger. sometimes and only sometimes it does turn off itself and reboot and then it doesn't show connected for charging. I press the home button and the power button and they don't do anything the home button works as i have tested that a few times it just seems not to want to go into dfu mode.

this might be several problems, dying battery may be a problem if phone only works on charger...

The power button works i think since if i press it it does come up with the slide to turn off and all the home button works since i can get out of the ipod parts and all. so I try the Battery change see if that sorts it I wonder what the other several other problems can be? can you give me a run down of them please polly

You need to have a working Power Button to get DFU Mode.

The power button works i think since if i press it it does come up with the slide to turn off and all the home button works since i can get out of the ipod parts and all. so I try the Battery change see if that sorts it I wonder what the other several other problems can be? can you give me a run down of them please polly — martin Clune

you need to have it plugged into a computer doing this

It takes a few tries to get right

plug it in, and press the home and power button, let go of the power button and hold the home button till it goes to the screen it went to new, which is a iTunes 7 logo(not the current 10) and it had a USB cable end that went to the computer, not phone

nick..it's not quite DFU..there are some timing issues here and a better description of "new" might help (sometimes people forget what it looked like out of the box 2 years ago?)
