Is this lamp worth keeping? 4k hour rating, 3.6k current hours

I have an Epson projector I got with a blown lamp at one point, at which point I pulled a 3.5k lamp from a dead EX3210 (same as the EX3212, without HDMI). I got a NOS lamp on eBay from someone who had some cheap OEM lamps in box, so I got a new lamp for the price of a knockoff; the 3.5k hour lamp got me enough time to put a proper replacement in the EX3212 :-).

However, I am torn on the lamp, having 3,523 hours on the clock. The ELPLP67 is rated for 4k hours on normal power, 5k on Eco (probably less with a mix, I think this one had 3.2k normal, 300 hours Eco). I still have ~750 hours left on it, but it's so close to the rated limit I'm wondering if it's worth keeping around or not.

Is this worth keeping as a spare lamp (noting the high hours) or a tester, or is it time to hang it up and say goodbye to this lamp? I replaced it now so I didn’t have have to worry about it anymore as the counter was not right on the unit since I reset it to clear the nag since some projectors shutdown when it’s “consumed”. I don’t think Epson does, but I wasn’t quite sure.

@oldturkey03 @jayeff

The reason they shutdown is the lamp blowing can take out other parts of the system. Usually that’s only an issue on DLP but it’s a semi common safety stop.

Don't know much about projectors but my view is that it is always worthwhile to keep working parts as spares, especially if they're compatible in a few devices and that you have the storage space to keep them.

You never know when you may need one if only for testing purposes.

I know how frustrating it can be when you need a part and that you have just thrown it out a few weeks earlier as you've never needed it.

@jayeff As far as running it in another projector beyond a stopgap I no longer trust this lamp due to the hours on it being so close to the “normal” max but as a tester or stopgap lamp I’m not overly concerned about the heavy hours.

The heavy hours and failed lamps on some are what drives price down but the downside is far from great for someone who isn’t aware of how often it proves to be the lamp. I’m at a point with these where no HDMI is a disqualifying loss due to the fact for every 1 PowerLite 88/88+ or bad budget school unit I can find 10 which have HDMI, including repair attempts. DVI is adaptable but I tend to steer towards HDMI for native compatibility. Been there, done that with battling DVI.

@nick I'd hang on to it too. It can function as a spare if needed, even just for short hours. Also, it may come in handy for any troubleshooting.

@oldturkey03 but as a main lamp it makes sense why I replaced it now, knowing the issues with the potentially partially inaccurate hours plus known?

I ended up labeling it as a “tester” as well as the hours. I don’t want anyone to use this unaware of how much use it has.

@nick and that is the way to do it.

@oldturkey03 I was apprehensive about just putting it on a shelf because of the hours. If it's new that's one thing, but this many warrants labeling.

@nick not sure about you but I have tons of labeled stuff stashed away. My goal this year was to downsize and I am failing :-( To much stuff to get rid of and not enough time.

@oldturkey03 This lamp got the pass because it still runs, but I was hesitant to keep running it. I put the rating Epson gives the lamp on the box so it screams well used.

Epsons usually contain the glass well, but yeah... exploding lamps aren't fun.
