My phone fell into the water

I dropped my phone into a lake, im not too sure on how deep the water is there but i got it out after less than five minutes of it being under the water. Ive had it in rice for awhile now but it doesnt seem to be getting any better, the screen is completely fine and then it starts flashing and sometimes it goes completely black. The top right of my phone screen is basically off and ive done everything i can think of to help get the water out. Please help me!!

hello Lauren,

keeping your iPhone in rice is the worst you can do. Contrary to appearances and opinions of "home-grown scientists from the YT era", rice maintains a humid environment with a specific PH, helping to ionize the environment and thus (due to the connected battery) it really enhances the course of copper corrosion.

Take the iPhone out of the rice, rinse it under a lukewarm stream of tap water (yes, douse it with water) - very lightly, keeping the charging port down. Then put your wet iPhone away with the charging port down (vertically) in a ventilated place (away from the heated window) so that the water drips or evaporates from the inside. In the meantime, find a good repair shop that will open your iPhone and verify any potential damage. If you bought it at an Apple showroom and no one has opened it before, there's a good chance your phone will come back to life quickly (after checking and a light cleaning).

lauren miller what you have is a water damaged device. Time to treat it like that.

The myth of rice as a tool for any kind of immersion accident has long been laid to rest as totally bogus. Rice does not work. It is the equivalent of doing absolutely nothing. It does absolutely nothing to help you with this repair. All it does is waste time and waste food. Check here https://www.ifixit.com/News/30047/rice-i... for more on this.

For now you want to stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse since it may further damage your phone.

The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using these guide iPhone 11 . You do not wait for evaporation of the water to happen on a closed phone. All that does is that it increases the chance and rate of corrosion to set in. At least open it up. You must remove all EMI shields. If you do not remove those, you might as well not do anything. After you remove those, clean the whole board, connectors and all, with +96% isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol in the higher concentration will evaporate quickly and there will be no reason for waiting. Follow this guide , and even so it was written for an Apple iPhone 3G, all the points are still pertinent to your phone. If you have to use water to remove any gross contamination, use sterile water and not drinking water. The importance here is the cleaning. While you clean your board, check for any obvious damage, like burned or missing components etc. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Best thing to do would be to clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner, but if you do not have access to one, this will at least help. Once all this is done, change your battery and reassemble your phone and reevaluate. Until it is cleaned, everything will only be a guess. Even with all this, water damage has only a small chance to be fully repaired, but at least you can give it a try.

Hi

Right we have to act fast! It’s a race against time

1 take it out of the rice it’s going to make it worse with all that starch

2 turn it off if you can

3 go to your nearest store and get distilled water and rinse the iPhone carefully

4 go and get a pentalobe screwdriver or take it to a authorised phone repair shop and ask them to take the screen off

5 unplug the battery and dowse the iPhones insides with isopropyl alcohol but don’t get any in the screen

Once you have done this Wait 48hrs and hope for the best!

Hopefully all goes well if it doesn’t tell us and we will tell you the next steps!

Thanks:-)

You're going to need to get it opened up to see if there is any corrosion. Putting things in rice, does not work. It doesn't absorb small amounts of water, even in a sealed environment. Silica gel is the best option. But if you power it on, while water is contacting certain points, you're going to irreversibly ruin the connection points.

Seems like this question is a few months old at this point - sorry for the late response.
