Volume goes up randomly.

Ken Perrin make sure that you do not have the volume preset. Check to see if the preset step indicator lights up as your volume increases. Of course, you could also try and set the volume to a level that is not overly loud and see if that changes your receivers behaviour. If you are using a remote control, turn the unit around (or cover it to rule out stray IR interference) and see if that changes it.
