Is there a guide for flexgate cable replacement?

I’ve done a lot of microsoldering, so I was thinking I’d try to replace the cables myself. Is there a guide for splitting open the screen to get access to the cables?

After watching this vid I’m sure you’ll change your mind! How to Fix Flexgate by Changing Cable Only

This is not easy for either 13”, 15” or 16” unless you are willing to risk having to replace the display assembly if you mess up.

I had a few bad units and tried it, it became clear this is not repairable with the needed quality the customer would be expecting.

Yes Dan, it's not for the faint hearted. I am working on my technique for removing panels without breaking them so I can refit into a housing in better condition (sticker silhouette, badly damage metal LCD housing etc) You need the air slice tool that Lui uses in that video, heatpad at around 60°C and definitely no Isopropyl alcohol. It's still so easy to push adhesive in and get it on the numerous backlight sheets under the very thin LCD panel. They tell me that the sheets on Aliexpress have a yellowish tinge compared to the genuine white sheets. You can have a situation where there is liquid damage to these sheets but the LCD panel itself is fine. It's not impossible to do but most people will crack numerous screens trying to remove them to reuse. Really best left to experienced technicians of whom there are quite a few around the world. The best fix for FlexGate is to solder a new cable end and plug to the backlight flex after you cut the damaged portion out.

@pedro147 - I also gave grafting a cable a try on a few systems. Sadly its not a durable as getting a replacement display. I ended up replacing the display in the end on one system. The other two folks ended up getting a new system.

There are things which are just impossible to do this is one of them.

I agree to a limited extent Dan. Even with a new replacement display there's a good chance that it will have flex cables that are too short as well. Apple said that they replace the affected 2016 A1706/08 screens with ones with slightly longerBKLT cables but I have yet to see any proof to substantiate that claim. Hence it will suffer the same fate unfortunately. If you refer to the credentials of the four people who I linked who do this exact same repair, you will see that they are some of the best technicians in the Macbook repair community IN THE WORLD. They all have, or work for highly reputable Macbook repair business' that offer this repair, give it full warranty and have proven the longevity of this repair technique if done correctly. Surely if they are offering this as a repair method, that substantiates the solid nature of the repair. However, yes Joe average doing this repair is very likely to get it wrong until he/she has gained sufficient experience at the technique.

That is in my opinion indisputable. IMO saying that this repair is impossible is incorrect. It is possible, people of a high enough skill set do it every day and it is a solid repair when done correctly. Not meaning to be contrary to your opinion as you are an extremely valued and skillful participant here, but the experiences of these people cannot be denied by me, you or anyone.

You do know who Louis Rossmann is don't you??? :)

End of rant and have a great weekend Dan, I always enjoy your answers and input into the ifixit community.

@pedro147 - To be clear I didn't say it couldn't be done!

Just like glueing a shattered mug which has sentimental value can likewise be fixed. To be clear it's not equal to what it was when it was created. So you need place that into the equation.

This is not equal to what Apple can offer with a replacement part which has the correctly sized ribbon cable. Paying for a replacement display which is around $600. So is a replacement display worth the expense? Highly questionable on the lower end models. Then let's look at the used market for this series depending on the CPU. RAM & Storage it runs around $500 ~ 800. So is the repair cost worth it?

So then it's a matter of a compromised repair. Today it's the only option if someone wishes to keep the system. And this is really a single repair attempt as the strain on the stub end over time causes it to fail.

Maybe its my feeling of the repair being equal if not better than what the maker offered. Will the ribbon cable repair hold up longer than a few years? My experience is not very long. If the person (and you) want to make the gamble I'm not saying you can't. Just make sure you spell it all out as you also don't want the customer to come back with the same issue for a good year, then you are likely on the hook for a replacement display on your dime if the repair fails.
