Flexgate on MacBook Pro 2019?

Hi I have a 2019 15” MacBook Pro and today when I turned it on, I’m greeted by this nightmare!

But as I tilted the lid, things got better

Could this be Flex-gate at play? I’m dreading taking it to Apple.

Nope not the FlexGate issue! But just as bad.

The Design Flaw Behind MacBook Pro’s “Stage Light” Effect. This is a FlexGate screen:

Your system might still be covered under warranty as Apple had a run of bad displays (T-CON’s). Can you get to an Apple Store? I would do so ASAP.

Otherwise this will be an expensive repair as the full display assembly will need to be replaced..

Thanks for the feedback. I took it to an Apple Store and the guy there just wanted to replace the full display assembly. But, that was before I educated myself about the display disasters Apple has experienced of late. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I will return to Apple with more assertiveness next time.

i just had my MBP 2019 16 inch repaired from an authorised repairer, free of charge as it's covered by Apple, I am glad about this and I think Apple should do this as I 100 percent sure it's a design flaw or hardware defect, nothing to do with the user. It s quite disappointing that Apple didn't test their product properly like open and close the lid many times. I purchased it in 2020 March and failed at only after 2.5 year is ridiculous, I have a MBP 2013 and still going good. Now I am not sure if I should sell it because it may only last about 2 years time and will fail with the same reason, or should I just don't open can close the lid too often?

**It should be because NZ consumer law force Apple to cover this issue.

Interesting. Did you have apple care, or did they acknowledge the fault and fix out of warranty? I had to pay!

Congrats! Our apple Country general manager refused to to repair our mbp because it is not on "the list". Was told to go to an authorised repairer another time. From him I got the same answer: Display must be replaced because the faulty T-Con can not be replaced alone. Cost > 700 bucks. It seems that this is apples customer care!

Sorry I think it's because NZ has a consumer law to force Apple to cover this issue. The repair guy told me laptop should last at least 3 years and phone 2 years. I see you guys need to pay for Apple's mistake is unacceptable, I think my next laptop would not be MBP anymore, can't afford it failed only 2-3 years time, my last one (2013 MBP) last 6-7 years, and I was using it happily while the new one screen being repaired.

Similar, yet different issue. 14 months into a MBP 2019 16 inch screen, opened it up and dozens of vertical multicolor lines. Closing to about 45 degrees, the normal screen returned but the bottom third was pulsating. Took it to Apple store: $686 for a new clamshell, a local mac repair shop wanted $975! It is now at MicroCenter being looked at. Owned Macs for decades, never had such a catastrophic failure in so short a time.

Have you had any luck with this? My MacBook 2019 16" machine is doing this.

@nickoslester - I've sent a few people to Apple and they had to push to get it fixed on there 2019 systems. I got word back from two folks last year, haven't needed to send anyone this year, but then again I've reduced my repairs to just the pro market.

@drdaddy cheers! My device is 3 yrs old in December. But I spent £2600 because I thought it would last me... I hope they help. Booked to see apple Tuesday..

have you fixed the issue? My screen of 2019 Macbook pro 13' has the same issue.

I am waiting for Apple to cover it as well.

Apple didn't pay. I managed to get the vendor (Amazon) to cover the cost of repair with Apple. You need to press the issue, as I'm certain they know it's a problem but don't want to admit it in the open.

Unluckily I have the same problem with a 2020 purchased Macbook Pro 2019 16".

The apple Servicecenter claims that only the 13" Macbooks would run under the extendet service program.

Was told that the 16" Macbooks are not qualified for this service program and therfore apple will not replace my display.

Any idea how to solve this problem without spendig a lot of money (donations)?

btw.: Removed bottem of the macbook, pressed a little bit against 1 flexcable and the problem disapeard during pressing (studied computer sience an therefore might be qualified to do this)!

That looks like it is a design or production problem of apple (we experienced also the flexgate problem with macbook 2016-2018)

@t_s - Yes & NO! The FlexGate issue is only in the Early 2016-17 13" & 15" systems as the backlight cable is to short and breaks.

Apple officially didn't offer a 15" program and you need to speak up other wise its your dime not their’s! Most people have managed to get it fixed when the program was active, sadly the window has closed on these systems under that problem!

Now when we talk about the 16" systems that's a different kettle of fish! This is were the color bars are seen, and that is a very different issue!

Apple had a bad run of T-CON's and there is an extended repair program for them but again you need to bend Apples arm to get it fixed otherwise its on you!

This is what Perer is struggling with if you look at his images. What I posted is the backlight FlexGate problem.

Got the same problem on 2019 16'' 3 years old ... Here is very well (In bad English) explained why : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij4jvCe2...

It is time that Apple approve new Repair program ....

This won't happen that many on Apple silicone since they use fans a lot less than intel MBP ;)
